Aleksandar Vucic vowed to continue supporting Bosnia’s Serb entity after parliamentary polls in Serbia ended in victory for his Progressive Party.

Vucic said after a meeting with Republika Srpska’s leader Milorad Dodik in Belgrade on Saturday that his administration would always protect Republika Srpska, the Serb-dominated entity in Bosnia.

Respublika Parliamentary Faction nominates Omurbek Babanov as prime minister, the member of the faction Kenzhebek Bokoev said to 24.kg news agency.

According to him, this is the basic condition of entering of Respublika in the future coalition. "But we stand for all factions to nominate their candidates for alternative," Kenzhebek Bokoev noted.

He added that the faction hasn't received an official invitation on joining the alliance yet. "But we don't consider the variant to stay in opposition till the end of the term," he said.

Political parties should change their old-fashioned way of campaigning by shifting away from gathering supporters on a large scale and attacking each other, and moving toward contesting one another’s ideas, a political observer said on Monday.

Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI) researcher Ikrar Nusa Bakti said gathering people during campaigns would only lead to brief excitement for potential voters.

KAJANG: The results of the polls show a positive sign for the MCA after gaining more Chinese votes in Kajang despite its defeat in the by-election, said MCA vice-president Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun.

Chew, who was fielded as candidate for Barisan Nasional against PKR’s Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail, said she was satisfied with the results as the Barisan Nasional managed to reduce its opponent’s majority compared to the last general election.

KAJANG: Traffic near polling stations in Kajang almost came to a halt as people came out in droves to cast their votes.

The elderly and wheelchair-bound were among the first to arrive.

Candidates – PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and MCA vice-president Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun – visited polling stations to greet voters.

MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and party leaders also visited polling stations to lend their support to Chew.

KAJANG: PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail is the newly elected representative of this state constituency.

She defeated Barisan Nasional’s Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun with 5,379 vote majority.

This is less than the 6,824 majority which PKR’s Lee Chin Cheh secured in a six-cornered fight during the 13th general election.

Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abd Aziz Mohd Yusof, who announced the results at 9.05pm declared that Dr Wan Azizah secured 16,741 votes while Chew garnered 11,362 votes.

There were 176 spoilt votes.
