The National Umma Party (NUP) leader a;-Sadiq al-Mahdi criticized the government’s policies in the western region of Darfur saying it has worked to tear the social fabric and transforming the conflict from a local traditional one to a national and international issue which led to a deteriorating situation despite the conclusion of bilateral agreements with some armed factions.

He argued that the Abuja and Doha agreements have failed to bring peace because they did not address the root causes of the problem, the lack of security and non-fulfillment of donor promises.

The Sudan People Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) has called on the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUSPC) to include the 28 June agreement in a new decision it is preparing to issue on the resolution of armed conflicts in Sudan.

The AUPSC was briefed on Monday by the head of the AU High-Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP), Thabo Mbeki, on his decision to suspend peace talks between the Sudanese government and the SPLM-N, aimed at ending the three-year conflict in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states.

 The leading figure at the Sudanese Communist Party (SCP), Sideeg Youssef, denied that his party received an official invitation from the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) to engage in dialogue.

He belied statements made by a senior official at Sudan’s Council of Ministers on Sunday in which he mentioned that the SCP is among those which will meet with president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir on Monday.

The Sudanese Communist Party (SCP) has announced its readiness to engage in dialogue with the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) provided the government ends civil wars and creates an environment conducive for dialogue.

The SCP leading figure, Sideeg Youssef, said in a talk show broadcasted by the state-run Radio Omdurman on Friday that the lack of freedom of expression and opinion is the major obstacle to his party’s acceptance of the NCP call for dialogue.

Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) is stepping up efforts to convince opposition alliance known as the National Consensus Forces (NCF) to take part in national dialogue aimed at resolving the country’s crisis.

The Sudanese presidency has said the mechanism for holding national dialogue, which was called for by president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir, will be announced within two weeks.

Late January, Bashir delivered a speech in which he announced a four-point plan for reform "to stop the war and bring peace, free political society, fight against poverty and revitalise national identity", calling for political forces to engage in dialogue to agree on the implementation items though he did not specify practical steps to do so.

Lakes state military caretaker Governor Maj-Gen Matur Chut Dhuol has sworn in his newly appointed ministers on Tuesday despite the senior figures from the ruling party - Sudan people’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) - boycotting the ceremony.

The swearing in ceremony was organised by the Lakes State government secretariat general office without the normal procedure of notifying the SPLM office in Rumbek in regard to swearing in of the newly appointed ministers.

The Sudanese government has slammed demands by the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) for negotiations on a new humanitarian deal to cease hostilities and deliver food to affected civilians in South Kordofan and Blue Nile state.

The head of the Reform Now Party (RNP), Ghazi Salah Al-Deen al-Attabani said that it is in the interest of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) to postpone elections to allow time for president Omer Hassan al-Bashir’s recent initiative to bear fruit.

"I fear for the NCP in the event that the next elections are held because time is running out and political issues have not been addressed," al-Attabani said in an interview with the pro-government Ashorooq TV on Sunday.

The Sudanese former presidential assistant Nafie Ali Nafie said that even though he is no longer part of the government or the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) top body, he still active in the political scene.

"Since I left power, I have been away from direct assignments, but I am not away from politics and I am not distant either from the relationship with the executive branch and the party," Nafie told the Turkey-based Anadolu Agency in an interview.

The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement –North (SPLM-N) negotiating delegation in Addis Ababa accused the government of lacking seriousness to engage in talks to resolve the conflict in South Kordofan and Blue Nile.

In a statement released on Thursday evening, SPLM-N negotiating delegation spokesperson, Abdelrahman Ardol, said the government team declined to meet them without the presence of the African Union mediation and when the latter managed to gather them they refused to hold any informal preliminary consultations as it agreed previously.

Lakes state military caretaker governor Maj-Gen Matur Chut Dhuol has sacked his deputy governor Mabor Achol Kuer who he appointed 13 months ago shortly after he was installed by President Salva Kiir, replacing the elected governor.

In a decree aired out on state owned radio FM-98 on Thursday that Kuer had been removed from both his position as deputy governor and as minister of education, science and technology without a reason being provided.

The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) has reiterated its demand for a broader political process to end the nearly three-year-long conflict in South Kordofan and Blue Nile, with parties expected to resume talks on 28 February.

The African Union High-Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) proposed a framework agreement to the Sudanese government and SPLM-N rebels providing to sign a cessation of hostilities agreement and to open humanitarian access. It further said the talks first should be limited to the two states.
