Sudan’s RNM denies it is returning to national dialogue

The Reform Now Movement (RNM) led by Ghazi Salah al-Din Attabani said its return to the government-led national dialogue is contingent upon implementation of its conditions.

Last January, the RNM suspended its participation in the national dialogue mechanism to protest the refusal of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) to implement a number of measures related to the creation of a conducive environment for the process.

El presidente de Sudán ha vuelto este lunes a su país tras burlar a la Corte Penal Internacional. Omar al Bashir fue recibido como un héroe en Jartum, tras aprovechar la complicidad de Sudáfrica para abandonar el país desde un aeropuerto militar.

La Justicia sudafricana había ordenado al Gobierno de Pretoria que impidiera la salida del mandatario, sobre el que pesa una orden de arresto internacional.

El presidente de Sudán, Omar Hasan al Bashir, regresó hoy a Jartum después de que las autoridades de Sudáfrica no aplicasen la orden de arresto internacional que pesa contra él por crímenes de guerra y contra la humanidad emitida por la Corte Penal Internacional (CPI).

El mandatario aterrizó a las 18.30 hora local (15.30 GMT) en el aeropuerto de Jartum, a bordo del avión presidencial, y fue recibido por decenas de seguidores del partido gobernante, así como por representantes del Gobierno y miembros del Parlamento.

The opposition “Sudan Call” forces has launched Saturday the “Leave to Stop the War” campaign and called for immediate international intervention to stop aerial bombing on civilians and end the war in South Kordofan, Blue Nile and Darfur.

“Sudan Call” forces include the rebel umbrella Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF), National Umma Party (NUP) and the opposition alliance of the National Consensus Forces (NCF).

El Tribunal Penal Internacional ha emitido una orden de arresto contra el presidente de Sudán, Omar Hasán Al Bashir, por crímenes de guerra, genocidio y crímenes contra la Humanidad. La decisión ha sido ratificada por un juzgado de Sudáfrica. El líder perseguido se trasladó el sábado a su capital, Johannesburgo, para asistir a la cumbre de la Unión Africana. Allí deberá permanecer al menos hasta este lunes. 

Sudanese security reinstates four suspended newspapers after ‘apology’

 The National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) allowed four newspapers to resume publication after making a written apology for publishing what was described as stories that are harmful to the society’s security and values.

Last month, the NISS suspended al-Intibaha, Akhir Lahza, al-Jareeda and al-Khartoum newspapers indefinitely without reasons.

Sudan’s opposition alliance of the National Consensus Forces (NCF) has harshly attacked the first presidential assistant and head of the organizational sector at the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), al-Hassan al-Merghani for belittling the opposition.

The Sudan Media Center (SMC), which has close links to the Sudan’s security services, on Tuesday, quoted al-Merghani as saying there is nothing left from the opposition alliance “but the name".

The son of the DUP’s leader also criticized the external moves of the NCF leaders, describing it as “desperate attempts”.

Sudanese opposition leaders barred from travelling to Strasbourg

Security officers prevented opposition leaders from travelling to France today. They were invited to participate in the European Parliament hearing on Sudan in Strasbourg, scheduled to take place on Tuesday.

The passports of seven opposition leaders, including Maryam El Sadig El Mahdi and Mohamed Abdallah El Doma, co vice-presidents of the National Umma Party (NUP), Siddig Yousef, senior member of Sudanese Communist Party, and Fathi Nuri of the Baath Party, were taken from them at Khartoum Airport early this (Monday) morning.

According to Sudanese opposition forces and displaced leaders in Darfur, the appointment of the new cabinet members, presidential assistants and state governors by President Omar Al Bashir on Saturday, only means a reshuffle of the same officials.

The chairman of the Sudan Revolutionary Front rebel alliance, and leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North, Malik Agar, commented to Radio Dabanga by saying that the formation of Al Bashir’s new government turned out to be a transferral of the same persons to other locations.

President Omar Hassan Al Bashir on Saturday announced the names of his new cabinet, presidential assistants, and state governors, after his inauguration earlier this week.

Minister of Finance, Badreldin Mahmoud, and Interior Affairs Minister, Esmat Abdelrahman, remain in their posts. Ibrahim Ghandour, presidential assistant for the past two years, replaces Ali Karti as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The Sudanese president Omer Hassan al-Bashir issued decrees on Saturday night naming ministers in his new cabinet formed after the official commencement of his new term this week.

The acting head of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) Mohammed al-Hassan al-Mirghani entered the government as Bashir’s assistant to replace his brother Ja’afar who was largely out of the public eye.

The former agriculture minister Ibrahim Mahmoud Hamid was also appointed as a new presidential assistant.

The Sudanese president Omer Hassan al-Bashir issued a decree on Tuesday night dissolving the government and relieving his aides in preparation for the formation of the new cabinet following the beginning of his new term today.

The decree did not mandate undersecretaries to run the ministries in the interim which suggested that the announcement of the new cabinet is imminent.

Opposition forces denounce inauguration of Sudanese president

The opposition forces allied by the Sudan Appeal and the people in Darfur regret the inauguration of Omar Al Bashir as president of the country for another five years.

Sarah Nugdallah, the secretary-general of the National Umma Party (NUP) commented to Radio Dabanga by saying that the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) does not seem to be embarrassed or ashamed for the results of the extremely low voter turnout, “though the Sudanese people have taught them a hard lesson, by boycotting the useless election.”

The newly elected speaker of the Sudanese parliament Ibrahim Ahmed Omer said his country is committed to promoting the principles of Shura (consultation) in all issues that affect the nation’s progress towards prosperity and development.

Omer, who has been elected speaker of the National Assembly by 375 votes on Monday, underscored the country’s leadership awareness of the importance of the national dialogue, saying they identified the areas of deficiency which is hindering its progress.

The leadership council of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) Sunday nominated Ibrahim Ahmed Omer for the position of the National Assembly’s speaker.

The newly elected Sudanese legislators will meet on Monday to elect the speaker of the lower house, the National Assembly, a day before the swearing-in ceremony of the re-elected president Omer al-Bashir.

Following a meeting of the NCP leadership council, the party’s spokesperson Yasir Youssef told reporters that the ruling party selected Ibrahim Omer for the position of National Assembly’s speaker.

Sudanese opposition leader prevented from travelling abroad

Security officers at Khartoum International Airport on Tuesday prevented Farouk Abu Eisa, chairman of the National Consensus Forces, a coalition of opposition parties, from leaving the country.

They claimed that the state security prosecutor imposed a travel ban on Abu Eisa, pending a lawsuit against him.

Early this month, on 5 May, Dr Amin Mekki Madani, head of the Civil Society Initiative, was halted at the airport in the same manner. He was allowed to travel to Cairo the next day.
