KUWAIT: Newly-nominated National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim said he would be working on “opening a new page” with the government and putting past wounds behind them. Al-Ghanim was voted speaker in the parliament’s first session yesterday by a huge majority of 36 votes, ahead of rivals ex-speaker in the void parliament Ali Al-Rashed (18 votes), Roudhan Al-Roudhan (eight votes) and Ali Al-Omair (0 votes).

In a speech after his triumph, he told fellow lawmakers that it was the Kuwaiti people who got him to the podium and that “they did what was best for their nation when they headed to polling stations in spite of the summer heat and Ramadan fasting. “I would like to send a message out to you lawmakers, ministers, journalists, the media and civil society organisations: When the Kuwaiti people headed to polling stations they did that because they wanted change.”

He also thanked the MPs for putting their trust in him, extending his appreciation of the role assumed by ex-speaker Al-Rashed. Commenting on the occasion, Al-Rashed commended the victor, saying he would be a form of “support” for himself and other lawmakers. Al-Roudhan and Al-Omair followed with similar sentiments, both congratulating the chief lawmaker on his triumph. – KUNA
