Egyptian court affirms fairness of 2012 presidential election

Giza criminal court upheld on Sunday a previous ruling that stipulated that the 2012 presidential election that brought Mohamed Morsi to power in Egypt was fair, according to the state-run newspaper Al-Ahram.

The lawsuit dates back to 2012 when the former presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq filed a complaint alleging that the Egyptian Election Committee rigged the outcome in Morsi’s favour.

Constitution allows Moussa’s proposal on merging parties: expert said

The Egyptian constitution does not ban merging political parties of similar programs, constitutional expert Salah Fawzy said Sunday April 8, after former presidential candidate Moussa Mostafa Moussa proposed the idea. 

However, Fawzy told Egypt Today that the laws regulating parties, the Parliament and its statute should be comprehensively reviewed. He added that the law did not tackle merging parties but did not ban it. Regulatory issues should be considered in such process, he continued. 

Sawiris refutes merging Free Egyptians party with Al-Ghad

Egyptian tycoon Naguib Sawiris denied on Sunday April 8 split reports within his faction of the Free Egyptians Party over proposed merger with al-Ghad Party. 

On his official Twitter account, Sawiris wrote: "It is totally unfounded, especially with regard to a party that did not even win a single seat in the last [parliamentary] election." 

Al-Masry al-Youm editor-in-chief dismissed from post over election coverage

Editor-in-Chief of Egyptian newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm Mohamed al-Sayed Saleh was dismissed from his post, after the paper was interrogated and fined over its coverage of the 2018 presidential election. 

“It was decided to terminate the contract with Mohamed Sayed Saleh as Editor-in-Chief, but he will be a key writer [for the newspaper] as of April 4,” the Board of Directors’ statement read.

Egyptian police raided the offices of a website Tuesday evening, arresting its Editor-in-Chief Adel Sabri, media has reported. Two days earlier, Masr al-Arabia had been ordered by a state media regulator to pay a $2,849 fine for republishing an article from The New York Times, which criticised Egypt's one-horse-race presidential elections.

Since Egypt has just been through an election, with its results announced Monday, one could not help but notice that the number of spoilt ballots has increased considerably from previous years. In his first speech after winning a second term as Egypt's president on Monday, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi vowed to work for all Egyptians without any discrimination.

"I promise to work for all Egyptians without discrimination. Those who renewed their confidence in me [with their votes] are not different from those who did otherwise. Egypt includes all, as long as a difference in opinion doesn't spoil a nation's cause," President El-Sisi stated in the televised speech after winning a sweeping 97% of the votes.

Presidential runner-up Moussa Mostafa Moussa told al-Ahram he felt proud of the result of the presidential election, after obtaining an estimated 3 percent of the vote, as he said it showed the true will of the Egyptian people and took place in a democratic and transparent atmosphere.

Moussa believes the election has shown that Egypt has passed a dangerous phase, “I thank god that Egypt has become stable and has passed its rough period as shown by this free, fair election,” he said, denouncing any claims questioning the process.

Egyptians vote in final day of presidential elections

Egyptian citizens headed to polling stations across the country on Wednesday for the third and final day of voting in Egypt's 2018 presidential elections. Voting started from 9am in 13,706 polling stations in all 26 governorates, with the process due to end at 9pm on Wednesday. Vote counting is set to start after the polls close on Wednesday night.

No complaints received since presidential poll started: NEA confirmed

The National Election Authority has not received any complaints since the start of the presidential election voting process across Egypt on Monday, according to the authority’s head counselor, Lashin Ibrahim. 

In a statement from Ibrahim, he stated that the voting process is going as predicted, and opened at 9 a.m. However, some polling stations have seen judges swap due to emergency medical conditions, which has caused a delays in opening schools for voters.

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said during a TV interview on Tuesday that Egyptians should not feel scared of speaking out freely, and that he is not responsible for the fact that he is not facing strong competition in the upcoming presidential elections.

"[People] should speak as they like. I have no problem at all [with that], and no one should have a problem with [freedom of] speech," El-Sisi told popular film director Sandra Nashaat in the one-hour pre-recorded TV interview, which was titled ‘A nation and a President 2018.’

Moussa denies accusing Sisi campaign of breaching electoral silence

Presidential hopeful Moussa Moustafa Moussa denied that he issued a formal complaint to the National Election Authority (NEA) accusing President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi's campaign of breaching electoral silence. 

“It didn’t happen,” Moussa said emphatically in a formal statement issued on Monday March 19. He also condemned those inciting a boycott of the election, describing them as “the state’s enemies”.  He affirmed that he will take all legal procedures against anyone who tries to manipulate the Egyptian people.
