TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani highlighted the significance of the upcoming elections given the situation in the Middle East region, saying that high turnout in the voting can further promote the country’s international position.

Speaking in an open session of the parliament on Wednesday, Larijani pointed to the parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections due to be held later this month, saying that in the “disturbed security situation” of the region, holding competitive and glorious elections is of high importance.

‘Participation in the elections is both a right and an opportunity to create a national epic and block the path for the penetration of the enemy,’ he added.

Iran Guardian Council endorses credentials of 166 for Experts Assembly polls

The council, which vets candidates for general elections, wed out 634 hopefuls who had registered to run for the February 26 elections, Hossein-Ali Amiri said on Tuesday.

He added that 37 candidates would be vying for seats in the 88-member Assembly at Tehran Province constituency.

Amiri said the disqualified candidates will have two days to appeal with the Guardian Council. The council will examine their requests during three days.

Grandson of Iran’s Khomeini excluded from elections

The grandson of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, founder of the Islamic Republic on Iran, has been excluded from contesting elections next month, his son said Tuesday.

Hassan Khomeini, a 43-year-old cleric with close ties to Iranian reformists, was not verified as having sufficient religious competence by the Guardian Council, his son Ahmad said on his Instagram account, despite “testimony from dozens of religious authorities”.

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran has called off plans to hold the two upcoming elections using electronic voting machines, Spokesman for Iran’s Guardian Council (GC) Nejatollah Ebrahimian announced.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency on Wednesday, Ebrahimian pointed to a meeting of the GC earlier in the day and said the issue of using electronic ballot boxes in the upcoming elections was raised in the session and the majority of the GC members voiced their opposition to the plan.

Tehran, Jan 20, IRNA – Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on Wednesday urged preparing the ground for large turn out of people for the upcoming February elections.
 
He made the remarks in a meeting with the officials in charge of holding the upcoming elections in the country.

Tehran, Jan 1, IRNA – Provisional Friday Prayers Imam of Tehran Hojjatoleslam Kazzem Seddiqi referring to two major elections ahead in months said here on Friday that full alertness and piety are needed for voting in February Parliamentary and Leadership Experts Assembly elections.

‘We need to elect representatives in those two elections to be considerate, to safeguard the martyr’s blood, to be farsighted, to safeguard the national security, to be the best possible and fittest for the purpose, and not to put Iran’s national security at stake,’ he said.

Number of applicants for Iran parliament seats surpasses 10,000

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – More than ten thousand Iranians have registered as of Friday noon to run for a seat in the parliament in elections slated for late February, an official announced.

Interior Ministry Spokesperson Hossein Ali Amiri said on Friday that 10,004 persons have registered to run in the parliamentary elections, 960 of whom are women.

Earlier in the day, Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli had announced that the number of female applicants have risen by 3 percent compared to the previous term.

Tehran, Dec 25, IRNA – Tehran’s Friday Prayers substitute Leader Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati said that Guardian Council will observe law, tranquility and freedom in the upcoming elections.

Referring to the Majlis (parliament) and Assembly of Experts elections, the ayatollah said in his second sermon here on Friday that election is honor of Islam, Muslim and the regime, so it should be held widely, securely and differences should not have any affect on election.

Tehran, Dec 21, IRNA – Expediency Council Chairman Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani on Monday registered for the 5th Experts Assembly election, slated for February.

Speaking to reporters, Ayatollah Rafsanjani said the Experts Assembly is the pivot, basis and pillar of Islamic Revolution.

He said in the next few months, the new Experts Assembly and Majlis will be formed – both playing key role in country’s destiny.

He added those winning public votes will shoulder grave responsibility.

Iran has begun looking for a potential successor to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, a top Iranian official said Sunday.

In comments translated by Reuters, former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani told the country’s ILNA news agency that the Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for electing the Islamic republic’s supreme leader, “will act when a new leader needs to be appointed. They are preparing for that now and are examining the options.”

El líder supremo iraní respaldó el acuerdo nuclear entre Teherán y varias potencias internacionales, pero advirtió que el gobierno se mantendrá vigilante y que no se puede confiar en Estados Unidos.

El ayatolá Ali Jamenei, quien tiene la última palabra en todos los asuntos de estado, apoyó el pacto en una carta al presidente, el moderado Hasan Ruhani, leída en la televisora estatal el miércoles.
