Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Wednesday reiterated his call for free and fair elections and voiced concerns regarding a government, non-representative of the masses, assuming power.

“You can see what happened in Balochistan and the Senate. It is not in the country’s best interests,” said the premier while addressing a news conference in Islamabad.

Former CJP Nasirul Mulk to take over as caretaker prime minister

Former chief justice Nasirul Mulk was announced as the caretaker prime minister on Monday during a joint press conference held by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Opposition Leader Khursheed Shah.

It took the government and the opposition six meetings to decide on a name for the coveted position.

“Today is a day of great importance in the democratic run of the country. We have agreed on an individual for the position,” said the premier during the press conference.

Khursheed Shah says he will not hold any further meetings with PM Abbasi over caretaker premier

A parliamentary committee will now decide the name of the caretaker prime minister as Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Leader of the Opposition Khursheed Shah failed to reach a consensus over the matter on Friday.

Shah told reporters at his chamber in Parliament House that there would be no more meetings between him and Prime Minister Abbasi over naming the caretaker PM.

Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Khurshid Shah said on Tuesday that there was still a lack of consensus between him and Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi over the name of the caretaker prime minister. The comment was made after a meeting between Shah and Abbasi to finalise the name of the caretaker prime minister ended inconclusively.

A day before Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah and Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi are expected to announce the name of caretaker premier, a few names have started doing the rounds for the post.

According to sources, a few names are under consideration for the post and Shah and PM Abbasi have agreed on who should be the caretaker prime minister. "Now, discussions are underway on the caretaker cabinet," the sources said.

Another Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lawmaker has joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Friday, along with two former legislators. According to details, PML-N lawmaker Jaffar Leghari after meeting Imran Khan in Lahore, announced to join PTI.

Jaffar Leghari’s decision was also endorsed by member of National Assembly (MNA) Dr Meena Leghari and ex-senator Mohsin Leghari, who also announced their decision to join Imran Khan’s party.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has said that the date for General Elections 2018 will be announced after mutual consultation, an hour after its website mentioned July 31 as the date for the conduct of polls.

"The date and schedule of elections is not something to be hidden," Altaf Hussain, a spokesman for the ECP told Geo News. He said that an "empty link was put on the ECP website."

Khurseehd Shah says name of caretaker PM ‘secure in his heart’ until formal disclosure

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Opposition leader Khursheed Shah on Friday finally arrived at a consensus pertaining to the name of caretaker PM. Talking to media, Shah refused to reveal the name and said that the announcement will be made on May 15.

“The name of caretaker PM is secure in my heart. I will not tell it to media no matter how many time they ask,” asserted Shah.

ECP denies media reports on elections date finalisation

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) denied on Wednesday news reports which had stated the commission has recommended that the 2018 general elections should be held by the end of July.

In a statement, the ECP said today that neither has a date been fixed for the upcoming polls nor is any particular date being considered. The ECP termed all such news reports as baseless.

The Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Khurshid Shah while addressing the Budget Session chastized the ruling PML-N for trampling upon Nawaz Sharif's slogan demanding respect for the vote by disrespecting it themselves.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar has asked the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to clarify the reason behind banning recruitments in government institutions.

Taking a suo motu notice of the matter on Monday, the chief justice questioned the ECP secretary, who was present in court, about the law under which they banned recruitments by public institutions. The chief justice asked if the ECP’s decision will be implemented on important institutions as well, where appointments of heads were under way.
