With presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto of the Gerindra Party managing to improve his approval rating over the past few weeks, analysts predict that the July 9 poll will be a tight race that neither candidate will win with a landslide.

“Both candidates’ chances of winning are now equal and the race will be very competitive. Jokowi supporters should not be complacent because the tables can turn at any time,” political analyst Burhanuddin Muhtadi of the pollster Indikator Politik Indonesia told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

Facing criticism, Gerindra backpedals on 'religious purification' pledge

Hashim Djojohadikusumo, deputy chairman of the Gerindra Party’s patron board, said his party had dropped a program of ‘purification of religious teachings’ in its ‘Manifesto of Struggle, following a number of criticisms that the party carries a fundamentalist view toward religions and diversity of beliefs.

“We have erased the sentence from our manifesto, because we based our party principle on Pancasila. We will uphold the law if there is discrimination against any ethnic, religion or race,” he said as quoted bytempo.co on Monday.

Meanwhile, rivals Joko “Jokowi” Widodo-Jusuf Kalla will be listed at number 2 on ballots, kompas.com has reported.

Both presidential and vice-presidential pairs, Joko "Jokowi" Widodo-Jusuf Kalla and Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa, have promised to improve the country's infrastructure if elected.

According to their mission statement, available on the General Elections Commission (KPU) website, Jokowi and Kalla have promised to build a 2,000 kilometers of roads across the country, in addition to building new ports, airports and industrial estates to support the country's economy, as reported by tempo.co.

Police increase security for presidential candidates

The National Police are preparing to dispatch 372 personnel to improve security for presidential and vice presidential candidates in the lead up to the July 9 election.

Insp. Gen. Putut Eko Bayuseno of the National Police’s security maintenance division said that personnel would assemble a special security team, which would begin working following the General Elections Commission (KPU) formal announcement of Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle’s (PDI-P) Joko “Jokowi” Widodo-Jusuf Kalla and Gerindra Party’s Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa as the official tickets in the race.

KPU wraps up campaign-fund audit

The General Elections Commission (KPU) has completed its audit of the 2014 legislative election-campaign fund reports submitted by the 12 parties that had contested the April 4 poll.

KPU chairman Husni Kamil Manik said that the commission had found no indication that any of the parties had violated campaign fund regulations.

Bandung, West Java (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) did not coalesce with many political parties because many of them have asked for ministerial positions as compensation, stated presidential candidate Joko Widodo, popularly known as "Jokowi".

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who is also general chairman of Democratic Party (PD), said it was Prabowo Subianto and Hatta Rajasa who planned to present their vision and mission in front of PD cadres.

MK rejects 196 election disputes

The Constitutional Court (MK) refused to process 196 cases of legislative election disputes on Wednesday evening.

Lawsuits on 192 disputes were filed by political parties, while the remainder were from individual candidates.

Presidential candidate Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, who is nominated by a coalition led by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), secured support from former West Java Governor Solichin GP on Thursday.

He said support from such an influential local figure would be essential for his presidential bid.

A number of Indonesian expatriates living in Egypt spoke with vice-presidential candidate Jusuf Kalla via video link on Wednesday, conveying their support for the former vice president who is the running mate of presidential candidate Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.
