Women’s chances in polls expected to slightly improve

Analysts and activists predicted on Sunday that at least two women might win outside the 15-seat women’s quota in Wednesday’s parliamentary elections.

“I expect that this time four or five women might win seats outside the quota because several women have proven themselves in the previous House and they have strong bases that will re-elect them without the need for a quota,” said Director of the Centre for Strategic Studies at the University of Jordan Musa Shteiwi.

Gradual transition to a constitutional monarchy is a one-way road, but it requires active political parties that can win voters’ confidence through adopting practical and workable programmes touching on the public’s needs and national interests, analysts said on Saturday.

Officials and observers of the Jordanian elections have admitted that political money has been used to influence the electoral process leading up to elections due to take place on January 23rd. According to them, if the phenomenon continues, the future of the elections would be endangered, their integrity would be called into question and official promises of reform and combating corruption would be in “an unenviable position.”

Two new election tickets emerge ahead of official candidacy period

Two new political groups announced their nominees for the national ticket on Thursday, two days ahead of the start of the official period to file candidacy applications for the January 23 parliamentary polls.

The “Nation List”, which will be a nucleus of a new political party, announced on Thursday its 27 candidates on the national level, headed by former deputy Lower House speaker Atef Tarawneh.

The new group is expected to announce its full programme next week, according to Tarawneh.

Leftists and pan-Arab parties agreed to run for the January 23 parliamentary elections under one national list, a leftist leader said on Wednesday. 

“We will form the necessary coalitions with candidates at the national level, particularly those who adopt programmes similar to ours, but we will not have our own candidates to run in the local districts,” Abla Abu Olbeh, secretary general of the Jordanian Democratic People’s Party (Hashed), said.

AMMAN – The Independent Elections Commission (IEC) on Tuesday announced that the upcoming parliamentary elections will be held on January 23, 2013, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. 

The IEC also announced that filing candidacy applications for the elections will start on December 22 and will continue for three days, according to the law.
