Demands for federalism still strong in Benghazi despite celebrations

Thousands of people converged on Freedom Square in downtown Benghazi to celebrate the second anniversary of the start of the uprising in the eastern city. The electric atmosphere of triumphant shouting, horn-honking, singing, music, dancing and fireworks, did not hide the visible disappointment and resentment of some who came to watch but stayed aloof from the crowd.

Libya: UN welcomes decision on formation of constitution-drafting body

The United Nations mission in Libya has welcomed today’s decision by the General National Congress on the formation of the body that will be tasked with drafting the country’s new constitution.

The General National Congress decided to endorse election as the process by which the members of the Constituent Assembly will be chosen. Once formed, the Assembly will draft the constitution – the next phase of the country’s transition toward a modern democratic State, after decades of autocratic rule and the toppling of the regime of Muammar al-Qadhafi in 2011.

Las revueltas árabes no han traído por ahora los empleos necesarios ni la ansiada prosperidad. Sí trajeron democracia, aunque acompañada de una desconocida inestabilidad política e inseguridad ciudadana. Pero las revoluciones también conllevaron una mejora tangible en cualquier calle u hogar de Túnez y de Libia: la libertad de expresión llegó de un día para otro aunque aún es imperfecta. Rápidamente proliferaron nuevos periódicos, emisoras y canales de televisión. Centenares de ellos han nacido en estos dos años. Otros se tuvieron que reformar.

Nearly two years after the beginning of Libya’s revolution, the country is still going through a period of economic and political uncertainty.

The security situation in parts of the country remains precarious, and attacks in Benghazi appear to be on the rise again after a string of killings targeting police officers in the city at the end of 2012.

Libyan military prosecutors have accused ex-leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil of abusing his power, after grilling him over the death of a general who led rebels during last year's uprising, a prosecution official said.

"Mustafa Abdel Jalil was accused of abuse of power and undermining national unity," by military prosecutors who questioned him in the eastern town of Marj over the 2011 assassination of Abdel Fatah Yunes, Majdi al-Baraasi told AFP news agency.
