The Justice and Development Party (AKP) scored an unexpected success in the Nov. 1, making a strong comeback after losing nine percentage points in the June 7 general election. In what came as a surprising victory even to its own deputies, the AKP managed to mobilize voters both inside Turkey and abroad.

White House hits Turkey over vote 'intimidation'

The White House on Nov 2 voiced displeasure at the "intimidation" of Turkish journalists during an election that bolstered the Justice and Development Party (AKP).

Just weeks before President Barack Obama meets his counterpart Erdoğan in Turkey, spokesman Josh Earnest said the White House was "deeply concerned that media outlets and individual journalists critical of the government were subject to pressure and intimidation during the campaign."  

New government to include two holding companies

The new government will include two holding companies. The parliament officials informed 24.kg news agency.

According to them, this is National Energy holding company and the State Property Management holding. According to the preliminary structure, it is proposed to retain the level of the State Agency for Geology and Mineral Resources and to pull the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Migration down to the level of Migration and Employment Service.

PML-N emerges leader in Punjab, PPP ahead in Sindh

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is gearing up for victory in Punjab with a total of 1,195 seats while in Sindh, while Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is reportedly ahead with a firm grip on 767 seats, according to the unofficial results of first phase of the local government polls.

According to the unofficial statistics, the independent candidates have clinched 1,239 seats followed by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) which managed to grab only 285 seats.

Several major players in Faisalabad politics faced a surprising defeat in the local government elections on Saturday. No one political group has gained a majority and most of the seats have been swept by independent candidates.

Of the 346 seats in Faisalabad district, 166 seats went to independents, followed by the PML-N which won 134 seats, the PTI bagged 36 seats and the PPP four. Elections were postponed for three union councils and the results of three seats have not been announced.

Local governments: No celebratory rallies, gunfire in second phase of polling

LAHORE: The government announced on Sunday that winners in the second phase of local government elections would not be allowed to arrange celebratory processions.

The decision was made at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif. The meeting reviewed the steps taken for maintaining order during the first phase of elections.

Report: Divisions Emerge at National Dialogue over 'Resistance-Supporting' President

Divisions have emerged at the national dialogue talks over the characteristics of a new president for the country, reported the daily An Nahar on Monday.

It said that the March 8 and 14 camps are disputed over a president who supports the resistance, Hizbullah, and one who calls for Lebanon to adhere to its policy of disassociation from regional conflicts.

The March 8 camp, led by Hizbullah, is advocating the former, while the March 14 camp is advocating the latter.

Reform panel to submit 2nd set of suggestions

KABUL (Pajhwok): Electoral Reform Commission (ERC) members on Monday said their evaluation study on changing electoral system, shrinking constituencies and defining role of the transparency committee has been somehow finalised.

 

At the end of August the Electoral Reforms Commission (ERC) following discussions with different segments of society submitted its set of 10 suggestions regarding electoral reforms to the government. The President approved seven of the suggestions and tasked the panel to find ways for implementation of the other three suggestions.

 

Parliament majority coalition formed

The Kyrgyz Parliament formed a coalition for the Stability, Confidence and New Opportunities in the Parliament of the Kyrgyz Republic. The signing of the coalition agreement took place today in the White House.

The ceremony was attended by the leaders of the factions that joined the parliamentary majority. They are Chynybay Tursunbekov (SDPK faction), Kanatbek Isaev (Kyrgyzstan faction), Bakyt Torobaev (Onuguu faction) and Omurbek Tekebayev (Ata Meken faction).

EU says Turkish vote reaffirms people's 'strong' democratic commitment

The European Union and Council of Europe have both underlined the high voter turnout during the Nov. 1 snap elections in statements issued a day after the polls, while expressing a desire to advance cooperation with Turkey on a number of issues.

EU High Representative and Vice-President Federica Mogherini and the EU Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn said in a joint written statement that the Nov. 1 snap elections in Turkey, which saw a turnout as high as 85 percent, “have reaffirmed the strong commitment of the Turkish people to democratic processes.” 

Erdoğan calls for world to respect Turkish election vote for stability

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made a call on Nov. 2 for the whole world to respect the country’s parliamentary election result, which gave the Justice and Development Party (AKP) he founded nearly 50 percent of the vote. 

Speaking to reporters after praying at a mosque in Istanbul, Erdoğan said Turks had voted for stability on Nov. 1 after the failure of coalition talks following a June vote.
