JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The Wolesi Jirga secretary on Friday urged officials and the Independent Election Commission (IEC) to stay neutral in the tomorrow elections, warning interference in the process would lead country to turmoil.
In an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News, Syed Ikram asked the government to remain impartial and avoid backing any candidate to make the landmark presidential and provincial council polls a success.
For the first time in the country’s history, power would be transferred from one elected president to another democratically elected head of state, he said, reiterating the government should stay completely impartial.
“If the government does not demonstrate neutrality, God forbid, the country will plunge into a serious crisis,” he remarked, claiming he had received complaints regarding a number of IEC officials backing specific runners.
Every citizen should play his/her due role in thwarting fraud attempt, the legislator said, acknowledging some Wolesi Jirga members had their favourite candidates but most MPs do whatever they could to counter irregularities.
“Security forces have bolstered law and order across the country and are determined to demonstrate neutrality during the process,” he observed, calling a credible vote critical to the country’s stability and prosperity.
