KABUL (Pajhwok): Meshrano Jirga or upper house of parliament members on Tuesday once again asked the government to announce dates for holding long-delayed parliamentary and district council elections and issue electronic ID cards.

Under the Constitution, the elections to Wolesi Jirga or lower house of parliament were due on June 22 last year.

Senator Farhad Sakhi said the leaders of the unity government should fix dates for the Wolesi Jirga and district council elections to end people’s concerns.

“The government has no intention to conduct the elections. The delay in elections has widened the gap between the people and the government,” another senator, Mohammad Rahim Husainyar, said.

He asked the two leaders of the government to put their personal differences aside and conduct free and fair elections for the sake of democracy.

While insisting on the issuance of the electronic ID cards, he said the cards would help ensure transparent polls.

Another lawmaker, Nadar Baloch, said the government leaders did not want transparent elections and that was why they were silent about the issuance of the biometric identity cards.

“The government is responsible to facilitate elections and declare the schedule,” said the Meshrano Jirga’s first deputy chairman. He added the delay in elections would multiply of people’s concerns and increase insecurity and further widen the distance between the people and the system.

He asked the government to stop violating the law and facilitate the issuance of the computerized ID cards and fix the elections dates
