The Election Commission's Selection Committee – which is tasked to start with the electoral system reform process - held its first session on Thursday and appointed a chairman.

In this session, two members of the committee – Din Mohammad Geran, member of the Supreme Court and Mohammad Naeem Ayubzada, head of Free and Fair Election of Afghanistan – were nominated for chairmanship of the committee.

But the seven-member selection committee elected Geran as their chairman.

Members of the committee said they will not let anyone interfere in their activities and that the members for the electoral bodies will be selected on merit.

"We will carry on our activities in a way to regain the public trust on electoral bodies and the election itself. We will try to introduce eligible and experienced figures to the president [Ashraf Ghani]," said the newly elected chairman of the selection committee.

A spokesman for the committee, Fahim Dashti, said they will work for 45 days and will let the people and media know about their achievements.

"We assure all the people of Afghanistan that they will be informed about each and every step we take in selecting members of electoral bodies. We are ready to provide information to any media outlet that is interested," he said.

Another member of the committee, Lutfurrahman Saeed, said they will leave no stone unturned to meet the expectations of the people.

"We will put all our efforts to introduce talented and honest figures for the election committees," he added.

According to the committee, the measures for introducing an individual as member of election committees are higher education, a good work background, five years of experience in government or non-government organizations, no criminal record and that they are over 35 years of age.
