Afghanistan Civil Society Network for Elections (ACSEN) on Monday criticized the recent changes made in the Election Commissions' Selection Committee and called it was against the proposed draft provided by the Special Electoral Reform Commission (ERC).

Members of the committee said merit and impartiality principles have not been taken into consideration in the Selection Committee.

"Government appointed heads of the two houses of parliament and also the head of the Supreme Court as members of the Selection Committee. This is against Article 152 of the Constitution and also this move questions the legal credibility of the committee," said ACSEN member Habiburrahman Nang.

Another member of the watchdog, Mahbuba Saraj, said: "Elections will have no meaning unless reforms are brought into the electoral system."

Meanwhile, second Vice President Sarwar Danish said government is committed to bringing reforms in the electoral system.

"The Selection Committee will hold its first meeting and will officially start its work in the next few days," he said.
