Ahmad Yusuf Nuristani's resignation as chief of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) is expected to intensify electoral reforms, said the Chief Executive's office on Sunday.

In addition, Mujiburrahman Rahimi, Spokesman for the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah, said that those who do not have the background for any particular job should not be assigned to other government positions.

He also said those involved in the electoral crisis in Afghanistan in 2014 should be prosecuted.

He went on to say: "Although the electoral reforms process was underway, Nuristani's resignation will now intensify the process."

However, bringing about electoral reforms has so far been a drawn out process but officials believe they are now on the right track towards bringing about electoral reforms.

Nuristani's resignation has raised hopes among analysts who say issues can now hopefully be ironed out.

"Other members of the IEC should resign like Nuristani, because they are not helping the process, but are creating problems," said Sediqullah Tawhidi, deputy chief of the special electoral reforms commission.

But sources told TOLOnews that the heads of the IEC and Independent Electoral Complaint Commission (IECC) have demanded government appoint them as ministers, senators, deputy ministers or ambassadors in the event of them resigning.

"Nuristani resigned to take up a position oversees and now other commissioners have asked the president for a salary for three years' - Afs150,000 monthly - in exchange for their resignation," said Ahmad Saeedi, a political analyst.

The government is expected to replace Nuristani with an impartial and competent person.

"New [IEC] commissioners, who are then going to appoint their chief, should be competent people," said Habiburrahman Nang, a member of Afghanistan Civil Society Elections Network (ACSEN).

People meanwhile urged the government to spare no effort to replace the current election commissioners with competent people.

Dur Mohammad said people should not be played with this time and election funds should not be embezzled.

The 2014 presidential elections, under Nuristani's management, ended in crisis which in turn led to the formation of the National Unity Government (NUG).
