Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Monday (February 24th) urged international donors to fulfil their pledges to the government in order to maintain public confidence in their development plan and demonstrate to Somalis "that the progress they deserve is coming".

Speaking during the first High Level Partnership Forum with United Nations Special Representative to Somalia Nicholas Kay, Mohamud said donors should not let their confidence in Somalia's future be shaken by acts of terror like last Friday's attack on Villa Somalia.

"Everyone in this room today knows how much progress we have made in the past two years. That is one reason why we are all here to discuss the process by which Somalia is rebuilding its security, its political systems and laying down the foundations for future economic development and prosperity," he said.

Addressing allegations by the UN Monitoring Group on Somalia and Eritrea that Somalia has violated the UN arms embargo, Mohamud said, "We have sent concrete evidence to address the discrepancies highlighted in the UN Monitoring Group -- a matter that could have been easily avoided if the Group posed their questions and concerns to us."

Also on Monday, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) announced its intention to continue supporting Somalia.

"IGAD is committed to continuing its support to Somalia until we have confirmed the country has fully emerged from the long-standing problems and becomes peaceful," said IGAD's special envoy to Somalia Mohamed Abdi Affey.
