More than 130 Somali lawmakers signed a statement Monday (May 5th) demanding President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud resign, accusing him of incompetence in carrying out the six-pillar policy agenda he laid out when he took office.

"We have noted that if you had acted out the six pillars you stated in your presidential campaign, the country would be in a much better state than it is in now and overcome the years of anarchy following the fall of the central government in 1991, in terms of politics, security, economics, good governance, social development and reconciliation," the statement said.

The lawmakers faulted Mohamud for failing to effectively implement federalism, restore public services, maintain security, halt corruption, adequately navigate diplomatic relations with Kenya, appoint effective regional leaders, and for the lack of progress on talks with the Somaliland region.

They also criticised the president for not establishing a functional justice system and constitutional courts, effective anti-corruption committees or clan reconciliation entities, and for inadequately protecting government and other key operations buildings from attacks.

The letter, signed by 133 lawmakers and copied to Somali Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Osman Jawari and United Nations Special Representative to Somalia Nickolas Kay, also said the government has not prepared sufficiently to hold elections in 2016.

This is the first such motion against the president from lawmakers since the 275-member parliament elected Mohamud president in September 2012.
