Supporters of the Hezbollah party in Lebanon have increased their threats against opponents through social media ahead of the May parliamentary elections.

 

The latest threat was against Lebanese University professor Bassel Saleh.

 

Threats are often made ahead of elections, but this year they take on a new edge given that the polls are taking place after the 2019 popular revolt against Lebanon's ruling class.

The UN secretary-general's special adviser on Libya has called on both Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah and Fathi Bashagha, who was nominated by eastern-based rival parliament as new premier, to preserve calm and stability in the North African country.

UN adviser Stephanie Williams held separate meetings with Dbeibah and Bashagha on Sunday and sought elections to end the ongoing political deadlock.

Tunisian President Kais Saied on Sunday dissolved the Supreme Judicial Council, the body that deals with judicial independence, a move the country's top judge denounced as illegal.

Saied accused the body responsible for appointing judges of bias, corruption and delaying politically sensitive investigations - including into the assassinations of left-wing activists in 2013.

"In this council, positions and appointments are sold and made according to affiliations," he said.

The legislative body is scheduled to meet on February 7 to vote for the republic's next president, a largely ceremonial role, in an important step towards the formation of a new government after October's general election.

Two children were wounded Tuesday night when rockets were fired towards the home of Iraq's speaker of parliament, security sources said.

Three Katyusha rockets landed some “500 metres” (1,640 feet) from the home of Mohammed al-Halbousi in the Gurma district of Anbar province, west of the capital Baghdad, a security source told AFP.

More than 50,000 people have participated in Tunisia's national consultation that will feed into the drafting of a new constitution, authorities said Wednesday.

President Kais Saied had announced the consultation in December when he extended a suspension of parliament, a move which fuelled concerns for the only democracy to have emerged from the Arab Spring uprisings a decade ago.

The consultation will last until March 20.

Pro-democracy groups have begun two days of strikes and civil disobedience in Sudan after at least seven civilians were killed and hundreds injured in clashes during anti-coup demonstrations in the Northeast African country.

Lebanon's Interior Ministry sets 2022 parliamentary elections for May

Lebanon’s Interior Ministry announced on Monday that its 2022 parliamentary elections would be held on May 15, rather than the previously set date of 27 March.

The decree still needs Lebanese President Michel Aoun and PM Najib Mikati’s signature before it goes into force.

The 2022 elections will be the country’s first since its 2019 uprising, when tens of thousands of people took to the street to demand an end to the corrupt governance that has characterized the country for decades.
