Hedayat Amin Arsala, former presidential candidate, endorsed presidential candidate Ashraf Ghani-Ahmadzai in Kabul on Monday saying that i joined Ghani because of the similarity on our thoughts and programs.

Arsala said that as a team they "will work together to bring peace to Afghanistan." He asked his supporters to vote for Dr. Ghani-Ahmadzai this coming Saturday.

“Today I announced my support to Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, because he has the capability to manage the national affairs of the country in the future and restore peace,” Arsala said.

Ahmad Shah Massoud Foundation Endorses Abdullah

The Ahmad Shah Massoud Foundation endorsed front-running presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah in Kabul on Monday.

Speaking at the event was head of the Massoud Foundation, Ahmad Wali Massoud, who said that the foundation will work with Dr. Abdullah and his team to improve the situation of Afghanistan.

“We will work together to advance the situation of Afghanistan; we will try together,” Massoud said.

Dr. Abdullah took the stage after the announcement and asked that the people vote on Saturday to strive for democracy in Afghanistan. 

Afghan Forces On Alert For Runoff

The National Ministry of Defense (MoD) on Monday announced that 195,000 Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers were deployed in different regions of the country to maintain security for the June 14 runoff.

The National Directorate of Security (NDS) reaffirmed their determination to foil any plot against the election process. Up to 400,000 Afghan security personnel are cooperating and are on alert to provide foolproof security for the elections.

Pakistan rejects Afghan claim of attack on Abdullah Abdullah

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Monday rejected Afghan claims it was linked to an attack on presidential front-runner Abdullah Abdullah last week that left 12 people dead ahead of an election run-off.

The denial came a day after Kabul accused “foreign intelligence services” — a thinly veiled reference to Islamabad — of being behind the two blasts, including a suicide bombing.

“We firmly reject any insinuation of Pakistan’s involvement in the attack,” Pakistan’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam said in a statement.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has firmly rejected allegations of its involvement in the attack on Afghan presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah and termed them as irresponsible.

"Pakistan is deeply disappointed by such allegations because they serve to vitiate the positive environment created between the two countries through constructive efforts over the past months," Foreign Office spokesperson Tasneem Aslam said in the first ever reaction to such allegations.

Security Preparations For Runoff Begin

Security preparations for the presidential runoff have been tightened in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, and other cities throughout the country.

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has committed to use all its capabilities to provide a secure runoff, but stressed that the public’s cooperation with the security forces will create for a secure election process.

MoI’s Spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said the ministry has sent more security forces to the eastern parts of the country and across the Durand Line.

President Hamid Karzai’s brother, Abdul Qayum Karzai, and a number of his team members endorsed presidential candidate Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai on Sunday in front of supporters at the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul.

Mr. Kazai said he supports Dr. Ghani-Ahmadzai for a “free and independent Afghanistan.”

Dr. Ghani-Ahmadzai welcomed the endorsement and vowed to work together toward a better future for Afghanistan.

“Qayum Karzai did not join the team because of our 25 year friendship; he joined to build a better future for Afghanistan,” Dr. Ghani-Ahmadzai said.

Attempt on life: Afghan presidential hopeful escapes attack

ISLAMABAD / KABUL: Afghan presidential frontrunner Dr Abdullah Abdullah escaped an assassination attempt on Friday when two blasts hit his campaign motorcade in the capital, killing at least six people. It was the second attack targeting Abdullah during the fractious election season, which has seen an uptick in violence with the Taliban threatening to disrupt the polls.

Abdullah said he was unhurt in Friday’s blasts but lost three of his campaign colleagues who were among the six civilians killed, according to the interior ministry.

MoWA Asks For Women's Participation In The Runoff

The Ministry of Women's Affairs (MoWA) on Thursday asked for wide participation of women on the June 14 runoff.

The Minister of Women's Affairs Husn Banu Ghazanfar stated that the 36 percent turnout of women from the first round should increase to 50 percent in the runoff, emphasizing that women should mark their future with their own hands.

“We want a 50 percent turnout of women in the runoff elections,” Husn Bano Ghazanfar said. "For this purpose, we have launched campaigns and asked the district chiefs and governors of 34 provinces to persuade women to vote."

Presidential candidate Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai on Tuesday traveled to Balkh for one of the last stops on the campaign trail before the June 14 runoff election. He told local supporters his priority in office would be the restoration of lasting peace and security and rule of law in Afghanistan. 
 
Ashraf Ghani, a former World Bank economist, also focused a great deal of time on his bread-and-butter subject - the national economy. He promised practical, localized programs that would bring dramatic changes to everyday lives.

IEC Faces Female Staff Shortages

Noor Mohammad Noor, spokesman of the Independent Election Commission (IEC), on Tuesday reported that despite cooperation with the government and civil society groups, the election commission has not met its needs for female staffers to place at polling stations around the country for the runoff vote in two weeks. 
 
Mr. Noor said that the IEC wants at least 9,000 female staffers at polling sites nationwide, but that issues surrounding literacy and traditional customs have made recruiting local women extremely difficult.

The trip to Jowzjan comes toward the end of the second round campaigning period, as Ashraf Ghani and his rival, Abdullah Abdullah, prepare for the June 14 runoff election that will determine which of them will succeed two-term President Hamid Karzai.
