The leader of main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has warned against political manipulation resulting from fake assassination attempts against the prime minister, urging his followers to do whatever it takes to preserve the legitimacy of the elections.

As Turkey heads toward key local elections on March 30, tensions are running high in this highly divided nation of 77 million. Speaking before his supporters in Kırklareli on Tuesday, Kılıçdaroğlu recalled an assault on Erdoğan's convoy in Tokat in 2011, just weeks before parliamentary elections. The CHP leader said he could not confirm whether the attack was genuine or a setup.

Several commentators have also warned against fake assassination attempts against Erdoğan, calling them tricks designed to shift the agenda away from a recent corruption scandal.

In his speech, Kılıçdaroğlu also criticized Erdoğan for "murdering" the judiciary, following the release of a voice recording that allegedly showed Erdoğan meddling in judicial matters. He reiterated his call for Erdoğan to leave his position, saying that a "thief, liar and murderer" cannot be prime minister.

“A prime minister cannot give instructions to a justice minister ordering a court ruling to be issued in a way he wishes. He should leave office the minute he does it. This is a graver shame than thievery. This is a shame of democracy,” Kılıçdaroğlu said.

Kılıçdaroğlu also claimed that despite Erdoğan being very poor when he began his political life, he has since become one of the wealthiest prime ministers in Turkish history. Declaring that he will hold Erdoğan accountable, Kılıçdaroğlu said: “I will find him and bring him to Turkey from wherever he runs away.”

Claiming that Erdoğan's whole family is involved in corruption, the CHP leader said that this is a first for a prime minister in the history of the country. Erdoğan's government came to power after declaring that it would fight against corruption, poverty and bans on freedom, gathering a majority of votes on the back of this, Kılıçdaroğlu stated.

The CHP leader said that he respects all votes made by the Turkish public, adding: “To those citizens who voted for the Justice and Development Party [AK Party], I am telling you, this government has fooled you. They promised to make you rich but they became rich themselves. They pretended to be religious. If you vote for them this time, you will be part of their sins.”
