ABU DHABI // Eight women are among the 20 Federal National Council members appointed by the emirates’ Rulers.

Noura Al Kaabi, chief executive of the media zone twofour54, and Dr Amal Al Qubaisi, director general of the Abu Dhabi Education Council, were reappointed for Abu Dhabi.

It will be Dr Al Qubaisi’s third term and the second for Ms Al Kaabi, who said she was “very honoured and humbled, and at the same time it is a huge responsibility.

“We are appointed members, yes, but the moment we stand after saying our vows it is also important that we represent the FNC, we represent the people, and we work very closely with the Government.”

Saeed Al Muhairi and Mattar Al Dhaheri will join the two women representing Abu Dhabi.

Afra Al Basti will return for Dubai and will be joined by Azza bin Suleiman, Majed Al Shamsi and Mohammed Al Kamali.

In Sharjah, Ahmad Al Shamsi, Dr Saeed Al Mutawa and Ayesha bin Samnoh were appointed.

Abdulaziz Al Zaabi will return for Ras Al Khaimah, as will Dr Nidhal Al Tunaiji, who served in 2006 to 2011. Dr Mohammed Al Mehrezi will be RAK’s third appointed representative.

Ali Jassim, first appointed in 1993, is the FNC’s longest-serving member and will return yet again for Umm Al Quwain, to be joined by Ayesha Al Ali.

Sheikh Mohamed Al Nuaimi and Saeed Al Kaabi were named for Ajman, and Alyaa Al Rayaysa and Faisal Al Thabbahi for Fujairah.

Ms Al Kaabi said she looked forward to continuing her work with the FNC. “I believe this is an excellent continuity. On a personal level, four years have been great to understand the FNC’s structure and elements.”

The other 20 FNC members were elected last month. The next term begins on Wednesday and will be opened by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, joined by the Rulers of other emirates.
