The Independent Elections Commission (IEC) on Wednesday said it would soon submit to His Majesty King Abdullah a detailed report on the parliamentary elections of this year, after it has completed a “review” of all stages of the process.

The report will include recommendations to improve the country’s electoral system, including amending the 2012 Elections Law, according to IEC chief Abdul Ilah Khatib.

Khatib declined to give further details on the content of the report, but noted that his agency hopes “to be a key player in any national dialogue over the development of Jordan’s electoral system”.

The election process was managed in line with international standards

During a press conference held Wednesday at the premises of the IEC in Amman, Khatib said: “The election process was managed in line with international standards, and the voters reacted positively to the new procedures.” Khatib addressed the press following the conclusion of the 30-day contestation process, which ended with final court decisions that saw MPs lose their seats.

He said the courts handled 31 objections and turned down the majority of them, while cancelling the election results in one district.

The Amman Court of Appeals decided to annul the elections in the Karak’s 6th District last week, resulting in upcoming by-elections in the district.

The IEC will announce the timing of the polls in the said constituency, after previously allocating April 20 as voting day for the by-elections in Amman’s 2nd District, necessitated by the passing away of Mohammad Mahseiri days after his win.

Khatib said that the insignificant number of contestations and the outcome of the process testify to the polls’ fairness.
