The African Union will send a mission to monitor the upcoming presidential elections, the Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday, while the Arab League announced that its mission will monitor elections in over 22 governorates across Egypt.

The African Union observer mission will include more than 50 parliamentarians, journalists and civil society representatives from various African countries, Foreign Ministry spokesman Badr Abdelatty said in a statement by the Foreign Ministry Wednesday.

The mission will be headed by “a high level African personality,” Abdelatty added.

Egypt bans Mubarak party officials from elections

An Egyptian court has banned officials from the country's former ruling party under ousted President Hosni Mubarak from running in elections.

The ban comes as Egypt prepares for presidential elections later this month. Former military chief Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi - who removed Islamist president and Mubarak's successor, Mohammed Morsi - is poised to win that vote.

Egypt: Salafist party demands release of 400 jailed members

Chairman of the Salafist Nour Party Younis Makhyoun said in press statements that he submitted a list of 400 of jailed members of his party to the prosecutor general who promised to release them "if they had not participated in pro-Morsi protests."

Makhyoun said that the Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat requested the names of the detainees to make sure none of them took part in protests.

Presidential contender and former Defence Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi began the first day of campaigning Saturday by meeting a delegation of Egyptian media personnel.

Sisi warned against division and fragmentation in the country.

“The division and fragmentation started more than 40 years ago with the emergence of private clergymen who were not part of state institutions,” he said.

“If the country falls down, it will not rise again,” Sisi added.

Parties and civil society organisations decry marginalisation of women in country’s transition

Four political parties and seven civil society organisations strongly criticised the passage of laws dealing with upcoming parliamentary elections without consultation with women’s groups and organisations.

The signatories to a statement issued on Sunday expressed “deep resentment” that the proposals of women’s groups were not heard “in relation to the electoral system to optimise enabling women to meaningfully and effectively participate in the upcoming House of Representatives elections.”

Church not for any candidate in Egypt's presidential polls: Coptic pope

Egypt's Coptic Orthodox Pope Tawadros II said on Sunday that the church would not support either candidate in the country's upcoming presidential race.

 

"I ask each citizen, Christian or Muslim, to read each candidate's electoral program and choose who he wants to be president," Tawadros said during an interview with Hamel El-Resala, a newspaper issued by the Catholic Church in Egypt.

 

The elections, scheduled for 26-27 May, will feature two candidates – ex-army chief Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi.

 

Maliki says has enough support to build govt

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who described a high turnout in nationwide elections as a “slap in the face of terrorism,” said on Thursday he had enough support to build a coalition government after elections a day earlier.

 

Maliki is seeking a third term following his country’s first polls since U.S. troops withdrew.

 

He faces significant opposition from within his own Shiite community, as well as from minority Sunni Arabs and Kurds.

ICC rejects Muslim Brotherhood call to probe Egypt

The International Criminal Court said on Thursday it had rejected a bid by the Muslim Brotherhood of deposed president Mohamed Mursi to probe the military's alleged crimes against humanity in Egypt.

"A communication seeking to accept the jurisdiction of the ICC over Egypt has been dismissed as not presented on behalf of the concerned State," the ICC said in a statement.

The request had been made on behalf of the Freedom and Justice Party of former Islamist president Mursi, ousted by Egypt's powerful military in July in what his supporters say was a coup.

PEC announces official list of presidential candidates

The Presidential Elections Commission (PEC), head by Judge Anwar al-Rashad al-Asy, announced on Friday the official list of candidates for the presidential elections, scheduled to be held on May 26 and 27.

The list includes former Defense Minister Abdel Fattah Saeed Hussein Khalil al-Sisi and founder of the Polpular Current and leflist candidate Hamdeen Abdel Aaty Abdel Maqdoud Sabbahi.

The PEC will publish the list of candidates in the official newspaper and Al-Ahram and Al-Akhbar newspapers Saturday.

Salafi Nour Party to announce its favourite candidate on Saturday

The Salafi Nour Party will convene on Saturday to announce the name of the presidential candidate it will support in the upcoming presidential election, said Osama Shokr, a senior member of the party.

Younis Makhioun, Nour Party President, told Aswat Masriya exclusively last week that the party's decision is an institutional one.

It is enough for the party that the candidate does not oppose Islam and is religious as Egyptians are, Makhioun said.

Sisi's and Sabahi's campaigns mourn victims of Friday blasts

The campaigns of presidential contenders Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Hamdeen Sabahi issued two statements to mourn a policeman and a conscript who were killed in two separate blasts on Friday.

Police corporal Abdallah Mohamed was killed when a homemade bomb planted at a police traffic checkpoint in Cairo's Masr al-Gedida district exploded earlier today.

In South Sinai, conscript Ahmed Ali Omar was killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up at a security checkpoint in al-Tor area.
