Sabahi gathers required recommendation forms to run for Egypt's presidency

The campaign of presidential hopeful Hamdeen Sabahi said on Thursday that it had gathered the required number of recommendation forms for him to run for Egypt's presidency, Al-Ahram's Arabic news website reported.

Hossam Moenes, coordinator of Sabahi's electoral campaign, said the team had managed to gather the 25,000 notarised recommendation forms, with at least 1,000 from 15 governorates, as per the country's election law. He did not specify, however, the exact number of forms the campaign had gathered.

Iraq doubles elections monitors in anticipation of high voter turnout

Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) on Thursday (April 17th) said it has doubled the number of international observers who will monitor the next parliamentary elections.

"The decision to increase the number of international observers from the EU, UN, and various Asian and western countries to 1,454 observers comes from a desire to give the new democratic process in Iraq more transparency and to monitor any breaches of the country's election laws in light of the expected high turnout by Iraqi voters," said IHEC board chairman Sarbast Mustafa.

Sinai tribal leaders lose local support

Sinai has lately seen a significant decline in the role and influence of tribal elders. They once enjoyed respect and appreciation, and their words for the tribe were final. Now, however, they are accused of being "informants" for successive governments in Cairo.

Most recently, tribal elders have been the target of a massive campaign criticizing them for quickly switching political affiliations and supporting whoever is currently at the Egyptian helm.

El Tribunal de Asuntos Urgentes de Alejandría prohibió hoy a "cualquier miembro de los Hermanos Musulmanes" concurrir a las próximas elecciones presidenciales y parlamentarias de Egipto, informó la agencia estatal Mena.

La decisión se tomó, según la fuente, "para evitar que miembros de grupos yihadistas y organizaciones extremistas puedan ejercer la política", en referencia a la Hermandad, declarada organización terrorista por el Gobierno interino de Egipto a finales del pasado diciembre.

La Liga Árabe desplegará observadores en los comicios presidenciales egipcios

La Liga Árabe firmó hoy un acuerdo con la Comisión Electoral egipcia para desplegar una misión de observadores del organismo panárabe en las próximas elecciones presidenciales en Egipto, cuya primera vuelta está prevista para los días 26 y 27 de mayo.

De acuerdo con este protocolo de cooperación, la Liga Árabe, cuya sede está en El Cairo, contará con alrededor de 120 observadores en Egipto bajo la dirección de la secretaria adjunta de la organización, la diplomática jordana Haifa abu Gazala.

An Egyptian court has banned current and former members of the Muslim Brotherhood from taking part in upcoming presidential and legislative elections, amid new attacks targeting the country's security forces.

The court, in the coastal northern city of Alexandria, ordered military-installed authorities on Tuesday to reject the candidacies from members of the group, which has swept all elections since the 2011 revolution.

Egypt to hold annual talks with IMF after presidential elections

Annual consultations between Egypt and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will take place after the coming presidential elections, said Egypt's Finance Minister Hany Kadry Dimian.

Dimian's announcement came after Christine Lagarde, IMF managing director, met the Egyptian delegation on the sidelines of the IMF-World Bank's spring meetings.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Dimian said the expected consultations are "an implementation of Article IV of the IMF's Articles of Agreement aiming to activate the supervisory role of the IMF with all member states."

El exjefe de las Fuerzas Armadas egipcias Abdelfatah al Sisi presentó hoy oficialmente su candidatura a las elecciones presidenciales, cuya primera vuelta está prevista para los próximos 26 y 27 de mayo, informó la agencia oficial de noticias Mena.

El asesor jurídico de su campaña presidencial, Mohamed Baha abu Shaqa, fue el encargado de llevar a la sede de la Comisión Suprema Electoral egipcia las más de 300.000 firmas recogidas en apoyo a la candidatura de Al Sisi, así como el resto de la documentación necesaria.

El gobernador de la provincia egipcia de Wadi al Gadid (suroeste), Mahmud Jalifa, dimitió hoy de su puesto tras haber expresado públicamente su respaldo a la candidatura presidencial del exjefe del Ejército Abdelfatah al Sisi.

Según la agencia estatal de noticias Mena, el primer ministro de Egipto, Ibrahim Mehleb, anunció que ha aceptado la renuncia de Jalifa y que ha dado instrucciones a todos los responsables gubernamentales para que se abstengan de tomar posición a favor de alguno de los aspirantes.

The supporters of former interim vice president and founder of the Dustour Party Mohamed ElBaradei have not lost hope that he will reach power, even though he left Egypt after he resigned in August to protest how the Rabia al-Adawiya protest was broken up.

“Authorize Elbaradei [to run] for President " is a campaign begun by a group of his supporters aimed at collecting signatures to support a presidential run and filing them with the Egyptian Recorder of Deeds, the government office responsible for authorizing candidates.

Many people believe that the result of Egypt’s presidential elections due in late May is predictable. Supporters of former defense minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the lead presidential contender, think that his win is a foregone conclusion. A multitude of challenges lie ahead, however.

Although these challenges will not result in Sisi losing the vote, they may end up producing a bruised winner. The ex-general might not secure the anticipated voter backing, enough for him to fulfill his announced agenda as a president.

Lawyer Mortada Mansour says he will run for Egypt's presidency

Outspoken and controversial lawyer Mortada Mansour announced on Sunday that he would run in Egypt's upcoming presidential elections, becoming the third candidate after former army chief Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and leftist political figure Hamdeen Sabahi.

In a press conference held to announce his candidacy, Mansour said he was running in order to restore "order" to Egypt.

"Egypt is currently in a dark tunnel, we need to restore the state of order and law," he said.

Concerning his electoral program, Mansour promised to end all strikes and protests in the country.

With presidential elections fast approaching, Egyptian Field Marshal Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has officially declared his candidacy. But the field of potential candidates is thinning out as senior political figures and even candidates question the vote's fairness.

Interim President Adly Mansour has recently been holding meetings at the Ittihadiya presidential palace with attendees whom he referred to as "top political figures", in order to defuse criticism surrounding the country's new election law.

Después de más de tres meses de todo tipo de rumores y filtraciones, ya es oficial:  Abdelfattá al Sisi, el ministro de Defensa de Egipto, concurrirá a las próximas elecciones presidenciales. El flamante aspirante realizó el anuncio a través de un mensaje dirigido a la nación emitido por la televisión pública. Todavía no existe una fecha para los comicios, que estaban previstos para mediados de abril, pero tuvieron que ser atrasados. De momento, el único otro aspirante es el político nasserista Hamdin Sabbahi.
