Presidency announces transitional period to last nine months

The transitional period that includes constitutional amendments, parliamentary elections and ends with presidential elections is expected to finish within nine months, said Mostafa Higazy, presidential advisor for political affairs.

In a press conference at the presidential palace on Wednesday, Higazy announced that the roadmap detailed in the constitutional declaration released last week is beginning to come to shape, reported state-run Al-Ahram.

The Muslim Brotherhood refuses to cooperate and acknowledge the “usurped” government appointed after the overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi, its Supreme Guide Mohammed Badei said on Friday.

Despite of an arrest warrant issued against him on Thursday, Badei gave a speech at the pro-Morsi sit-in at Raba’a Al-Adaweya at 6:30pm. Security reports had initially indicated that he was detained following the overthrow of Morsi, but the Brotherhood denied his arrest.

Salvation Front: Mursi's speech reinforces image of incapable president

The speech President Mohamed Mursi gave on Wednesday only makes the National Salvation Front more adamant on calling for early presidential elections to achieve the revolution's goals.

In a statement it made today, the front expressed its confidence that millions of Egyptians will peacefully demonstrate on June 30 to assert their will and rectify the revolution's course.

Protesters gathered in Cairo, Alexandria, Port Said, Suez, Daqahleya, and Kafr Al-Sheikh to voice their dissent against the ruling Muslim Brotherhood and demand the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi’s government.

Al-Dostour Party Spokesman Haitham El-Hariri in Alexandria said that a group of opposition members and Islamists there had started chanting against each other after Friday prayers at the Qa’id Ibrahim Mosque. Minor clashes broke out with some rock-throwing until the Islamists left the scene, El Hariri said.

Egyptian presidency said on Sunday that the constitution, approved by the majority in a popular referendum, is a reference to all citizens for them to act accordingly.

The presidency added that respecting the constitution is dutiful to all the authorities of the state, in a statement published on its official page.

“The Shura Council (upper house of parliament) will continue to practice its legislative powers until the election of the lower house of parliament,” said the statement.

The National Salvation Front (NSF), as well as the Al-Watan, Al-Wasat and Ghad Al-Thawra parties revealed their plans to create parallel parliaments and shadow governments.

Ahmed Hawary, NSF spokesperson, told Daily News Egypt “the formation of a parallel government is still a suggested idea” and that they have not come up with the final plan for this shadow government.

Founders of Egypt’s 'Rebel' campaign, a newly established movement that aims to withdraw confidence from President Mohamed Morsi by collecting citizens' signatures, spoke at an open forum on Wednesday to discuss the campaign, which has recently gone viral online and on the streets.

'Rebel' campaigners hope to collect 15 million signatures and hold a mass sit-in on 30 June – marking the end of Morsi's first year as president – to call for snap presidential elections and force Morsi out of office.

Egypt court rejects election law, further poll delays expected

Egypt 's highest court ruled on Saturday that parts of a revised election law setting out terms for a parliamentary election were unconstitutional, casting fresh doubt over a poll that has already been delayed.

The Islamist-dominated upper house of parliament had approved the law last month and sent it to the Supreme Constitutional Court to check the legality of the voting procedures for a new lower house.

Opposition politicians had denounced the text of the revised election law approved by parliament and repeated threats to boycott the vote.

Egypt’s main opposition alliance, the National Salvation Front, will meet on Monday to discuss the latest political and economic developments.

The NSF is also expected to discuss future work plans and strategies, the state news agency reported.

The opposition alliance intends to transform itself into a larger network with roots in every part of the country.
