MULTAN: In a display of ‘political sagacity’ ahead of the local polls, residents of Basti Baghwali have conducted an election of their own to select one of the two aspirants for the actual contest “to have better chance of winning”.

The political activists set up two polling stations (one each for men and women) to ‘elect’ the candidate for general councillor slot in Khanewal’s Union Council 116.

ECP orders action over manhandling of returning officer

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has ordered Chief Secretary and Inspector General of Police, Punjab, to take action against thee LG poll candidates who manhandled Returning Officer Allah Ditta Warraich in Hafizabad.

The candidates are: Aman Ullah Sandhu, Manzoorul Hasan Chatta and Fazal Qadir.

Terming the incident a criminal act to sabotage elections, the ECP ordered Chief Secretary and Inspector General of Police, Punjab, to take action against culprits under the law and submit a report to the commission by 2pm on Wednesday.

Lg polls: Nomination papers submission from today

ISLAMABADThe process of submission of nomination papers for local government elections in Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) will start from Monday (today). Scrutiny of nomination papers will be conducted from November 1 to the 4th. Appeals against rejection or acceptance of nomination papers would be filed on November 5 and 6. Appeals would be disposed of from 7 to 9th. Candidates can withdraw their candidature on November 10th while the final list of contesting candidates with symbols allotted to them will be published the following day.

Prime Minister Tammam Salam will not step down from his post on Thursday, as media reports have been claiming in recent weeks, reported An Nahar daily on Wednesday.

It said that the premier “will not give up his political mission even if his personal interests lie in resigning.”

“Resignation however will not serve the country's interests, especially since the current government is not one of approving decrees, but one of managing the republic in the absence of a president,” his visitors told An Nahar.

Hizbullah and al-Mustaqbal movement stressed during their twentieth dialogue session on Tuesday the need to activate the work of the paralyzed government and parliament and continue the implementation of the security plan in all regions.

The session was attended by Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq after media reports said he could be replaced by another Mustaqbal representative. The minister had waged a fierce verbal attack on Hizbullah earlier this month, fueling speculation that his relatively good ties had worsened with the rival party.

A Justice and Development Party (AKP) official’s suggestion that Turkey will again head to the polls if the Nov. 1 polls do not produce a majority government are tantamount to blackmail of the country, the main opposition has said.

“If a result resembling the June 7 results emerges, I’m afraid there will again be talk of elections,” AKP Deputy Chair Mehmet Ali Şahin said recently.

The Justice and Development Party (AKP) is expecting a comeback of nearly 7 percent of its voters, who had earlier casted their vote for the party but stepped back in the June 7 election, Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmuş has said. 

“The political outlook that emerged after [the] June 7 [election] will bring the AKP new votes due to a search for political sustainability and a powerful government,” Kurtulmuş told Hürriyet Daily News during an interview on Oct. 26.
