Wolesi Jirga passes electoral law

The Wolesi Jirga, or lower house of the Parliament, passed on Wednesday the new electoral law after long debating and with some amendment in it.

Over the past 11 years, parliamentary elections have been conducted under legislative decrees, but five months back, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) prepared the draft law and sent to the Wolesi Jirga after the .

After a prolonged debate and some changes in 11 articles of the draft law, 101 of the 136 legislators present during the session voted in favour of the new electoral laws having 17 chapters and 67 articles.

The new law would be dispatched to Meshrano Jirga or upper house of parliament for approval before signing by president.
