KABUL (Pajhwok): The governor of northwestern Badghis province on Tuesday promised concrete steps would be taken to ensure security for the April 5 presidential and provincial elections.
In an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News, Ahmadullah Alizai said an effective security plan was being prepared to ensure peaceful conduct of the election.
Government officials would not be allowed to use the state machinery for or against any candidate, he said, adding seven of 44 polling stations in the province were under security.
But the issue would be resolved through mediation by tribal elders and election would be held throughout the province, the governor said. Elders of Bala Murghab district have demanded establishment of 14 additional polling stations.
Alizai acknowledged security organs were acting in close coordination to create the right environment for the polls. Additionally, youth and tribal elders have also assured the authorities of their support.
Election is a national process and it is the responsibility of each citizen to cast their vote, according to the governor, who said 42 developments projects, including the rehabilitation of Baghak Canal, were underway in the province.
He added electricity import from Turkmenistan, a project that would be completed by end of April, would benefit residents.
