It is time for Afghan women to put an end to the historic deprivations of their rights and play a more significant role in the society, second vice president to Zalmai Rasoul Habiba Sarabi said on Thursday at a gathering for the International Women’s Day. Additionally, the first vice president to Mr. Rasoul Ahmad Zia Masoud called on women to take a stand in defense of their rights.

March 8, which coincides with the International Women’s Day, is a reminder to the world to end discrimination against women and to not treat them as second class citizens. Moreover, the day condemns violence against women and demands that women's physical and mental health and well-being be respected.

“Like women everywhere, Afghan women should have access to all essential facilities within the framework of Islamic laws,” a kabul resident Alina said.

Throughout the years, Afghan women have tolerated tremendous brutalities and domestic violence.

“They should remember women and get awareness about their sorrows,” civil society advocate Suhaila Halimi said.

Ms. Habiba Sarabi was the first female in the history of Afghanistan who served as the governor of Bamian Province. Her nomination as the second vice president to Zalami Rasoul has brought much optimism among many Afghan women who consider it a new chapter in the country's political history.

“Our team wants women to be part of decision-making. Afghan women should not be treated like uninvited guests of this land. They are hosts and leaders in economic, cultural and political spheres," second vice president to Zalmai Rasoul Habiba Sarabi said. "Women should no longer be discriminated against, no more sighs and moans of women should be heard, no more ears and noses should be cut."

There are some apprehensions among women regarding the peace negotiation process between the government and the armed insurgents. Women fear that their achievements and rights would be used as a bargaining chip in the peace process.
