The Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan (IEC) on Tuesday discussed efforts to increase the election observers to at leas 300,000 and emphasized the role of election observers in ensuring the legitimacy and credibility of the elections.

“Fortunately, 58474 people have so far registered their names with the election commission and have achieved certificates to monitor the elections,” IEC Commissioner Sarir Ahmad Barmak said.

A large number of civil society institutions, media outlets, domestic and international observers have shown interest in monitoring the upcoming elections, as they have persistently urged that the election supervision and poll monitoring are important factors in Afghanistan's future stability and political sustainability.

Some civil rights activists have asked the election commission to ensure the quality of sensitive election materials in order to prevent riggings in the upcoming polls.

“We hope that the dye used on the election day has good quality in order to avoid riggings,” a spokesman to the Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistan (FEFA) Fahim Naeemi said.

It is expected that the European Union (EU) will also dispatch some observers to monitor the April poll. The IEC has pledged to accommodate international observers and allow them to visit any election sites. The election candidates will only monitor specific polling stations according to the specific code issued to them by the elections commission.
