Sindh to hold local govt elections in November

KARACHI: The Sindh government is likely to hold the local bodies elections in November, this year. This was revealed at a meeting held at Chief Minister House on Saturday.

CM Syed Qaim Ali Shah presided over the meeting and discussed transparent local government elections in the wake of Supreme Court’s verdict. The provincial minister for local government and information, Sharjeel Inam Memon, minister for works and services Mir Hazar Khan Bijrani, minister for parliamentary affairs Dr Sikandar Mandhro, adviser to CM for finance Syed Murad Ali Shah, secretary local government Muhammad Jawaid Hanif, and law secretary Mir Mohammad Shaikh attended the meeting.

Sources privy to the development told The Express Tribune that the government has formed a committee comprising the advocate-general, minister for parliamentary affairs and secretary law to work out the modalities for holding the polls. “We have already stated that we are ready to hold elections but today, we have started working towards free and fair polls,” said Dr Sikandar Mandhro. “We are considering a number of dates, including November but the final date will be announced after the detail judgment of the apex court.”

Meanwhile, a handout issued by CM House said the provincial government has always honoured the court decisions and is ready to hold local bodies’ election. The CM directed the law secretary, Mir Muhammad Shaikh, and legal experts of Sindh government to prepare their working paper for the local bodies elections. “We will evolve a strategy to hold free and fair local government election in next meeting,” CM said.
