Speaking to supporters in Herat on Sunday, presidential candidate Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai promised to turn the western province into the industrial and commercial trade capital of Afghanistan if elected.

The development plans Ashraf Ghani shared with his supporters on Sunday included the construction of a trade port along the border with Turkmenistan, the completion of the Kamal Khan Dam project in Nimroz, the Salma and Pashdan Dam in Herat and the Badghis Highway. He also promised to turn the Herat International Airport into a hub for international trade and transit.

A former Finance Minister and well-respected economist, Ashraf Ghani also spoke about Herat's natural resource wealth and its potential to fuel economic development in the province's capital, which is already one of Afghanistan's most commercially vibrant cities.

“Herat does not only have large deposits of natural gas, but it also has oil that can help turn Herat into an industrial city," Ashraf Ghani told the large crowd gathered to hear him and his running-mates speak.

“We promise you that the western zone is ready for development and Ashraf Ghani's team has good plans for the future,” Ashraf Ghani's Second Vice President Sarwar Danesh said.

At Sunday's gathering, the Western Election Alliance announced its support for Ashraf Ghani and his team and called on local residents to vote their way.

“We announce our support for Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and we will vote for him on Election Day," said Dr. Dauod Shah Saba, a senior member of the West Election Alliance.
