On Wednesday UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Afghanistan, Jan Kubiš, expressed satisfaction  over the preparations undertaken by the independent election commission of Afghanistan (IEC) with regard to the presidential elections.

Kubiš urged the neighboring countries that attended the UNSC meeting that have made commitments to continue backing Afghanistan in restoring stability and security.

He expressed that a transparent and credible election will pave the way for a peaceful transition of political power in the country.

“This time the election process is handled well than before,” Kubiš said. “The basis of preparation is on valid legislations, responsible election bodies and two independent election commissions that are all responsible to provide a fair and safe election for the increasing number of voters.”

Kubiš said the result of improved groundwork than the previous election has brought hope that this election will be held in a diplomatic manner.

“A strong message came from very prominent neighboring countries of Afghanistan pledging and committing them to work towards regional security, stability and cooperation during the period of transition,” Kubiš said.

Afghanistan’s prominent politically and militarily influenced neighbors are Iran and Pakistan.

Jan Kubiš noted that the Afghan people have now realized their right to vote and are willing to participate in Saturday’s elections marking the future of their country.
