An Iranian lawmaker says a resolution recently adopted by the European Parliament (EP) on the human rights situation in the Islamic Republic is an act of interference in the country’s internal affairs.

“The move by the European Union is [an instance of] meddling in Iran’s domestic affairs,” said Nozar Shafi’ee, a member of the Majlis Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy, on Thursday.

Referring to a statement in the resolution that Iran’s presidential election back in June 2013 was not based on the democratic standards of the European Union (EU), the Iranian lawmaker said that the EU’s expectations are not acceptable to Iran and the world community, and are merely those of the EU itself.

“Some of the expectations are unrealistic and only take into consideration the desires of the European Union… the union defines human rights based on its own criteria; likewise, it interprets the presidential election [in Iran] based on the Western standards of democracy. Therefore, such approaches are merely the viewpoint of the EU toward Iran,” Shafi’ee said.

He added that Iran is not bound to coordinate its policies with the EU, adding that no country has the right to interfere in the affairs of other states.

On Thursday, the European Parliament passed a resolution on the EU’s strategy toward Iran.

In the motion, the EP expressed concern over the alleged violation of human rights in Iran.

It also claimed that Iran’s presidential election in June 2013, which led to the victory of Hassan Rouhani, was “not held according to the democratic standards valued by the EU.”

Iran has dismissed the resolution as unrealistic and counterproductive at a time when the Islamic Republic and the European Union have taken initial steps to resolve issues in relations.
