Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) officials on Wednesday said complaints from Nangarhar, Laghman, Kunar, Nuristan, Paktia, Paktika, Khost, Samangan, Balkh, Jowzjan, Sare-Pul and Faryab provinces had been reviewed.
The ECC has begun the final leg of its fraud and violation adjudication process. Hundreds of complaints, most of them filed by candidates against each other, have been reviewed over the past week in front of representatives of candidates, media and civil society groups.
Campaign representatives for the two leading candidates - Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai - along with a number of civil society groups have criticized the ECC for a lack of transparency in the complaints assessment process.
But ECC Secretariat chief Nader Mohseni has defended the commission, and assured the public that all is being done to maintain its integrity.
“We will do everything in our power to address the complaints; our goal is to maintain the fairness and transparency of the elections,” Mohseni.
Zelgai Sajad, a member of Abdullah's campaign, and Muhammad Waly, a member of Ashraf Ghani’s team, each presented ECC members with allegations and supporting evidence related to fraud on Election Day.
“We have many proof that in Nangarhar province fraud took place at a number of sites,” Sajad said. “We have submitted documentation and evidence so it can be addressed.”
“A number of similar tick marks can be seen in the ballots of Balkh, which shows that fraud has taken place at some of the sites,” Waly said.
Although the ECC’s complaints review was expected to end on Saturday, and the report submitted to the Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Sunday, it now looks like the process could be fully wrapped-up by Thursday.
