The Independent Election Commission (IEC) still awaits the findings of the Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) after they completed the complaints adjudication process last week. ECC representative Nader Mohseni has said the ECC’s rulings on fraud and other issues will be sent to the IEC on Tuesday.

Although the ECC was expected to submit its findings immediately after completing its review of the some 900 complaints directly pertaining to election results, Mr. Mohseni said that there is still some work that remains unfinished.

Based on the election timeline, ECC was supposed to make their final decision by May 8.

Mr. Mohseni blamed the IEC’s two day delay in announcing the preliminary results as the reason behind the ECC’s current delay.

“Our decision will not be sent today, but we will try and send our decision to the IEC in the next two days," Mohseni said.

IEC spokesman Noor Mohammad Noor has warned further delays could be on the horizon if the ECC's decision entails major changes to the results of the election. He said registering the decisions in the IEC’s database would also take time.

“We are committed to announcing the results of the election on May 14, but we expect the ECC to send their final decisions to us as soon as possible,” he said.

Once the final results are announced, and if no single candidate gets over 50 percent of the vote, there will be a runoff round between the top two contenders. Based on the preliminary results Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai lead the pack of presidential candidates.
