Early Saturday morning both presidential candidates, Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani-Ahmadzai, headed to the polls to cast their votes in the first second-round elections.

After Dr. Abdullah cast his ballot at Istiqlal High School in Kabul, he addressed the public and election officials asking the Afghan government and electoral commissions to perform their duties responsibly and effectively. He asserted that his team will not tolerate a fraudulent process.

“Officials of the electoral commissions, government and all other responsible officials should work together to prevent frauds,” Dr. Abdullah said. “An election without fraud is in favor of Afghanistan. We do not want even a single fraudulent vote in our favor. We hope others will give the same message to the public."

In the meantime, presidential candidate Ashraf Ghani-Ahmadzai, along with his second Vice President Mohammad Sarwar Danesh, casted their votes at Habibia High School south of Kabul.

Before voting, Dr. Ghani-Ahmadzai, Habibia alumni, entered one of the classrooms and shared a few memories from his time here. There, he emphasized the importance of education for the future of Afghanistan.

“We hope that all people take part in the election," he said. "The fingers that were pressing triggers yesterday are making history today."
