The United Nations (UN) Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General for Afghanistan, Nicholas Haysom, has praised the election commission's initiatives in tackling challenges witnessed in the election process.

Haysom was pleased to see that the process was completely managed by Afghans and stated that the election preparations were better than the first round.

“In comparison to other elections, we can say that [the runoff] has provided a significant opportunity for Afghans to ensure that the elections are free and fair,” he said.

In addition, Haysom called on the candidates to accept the election results and avoid acting like athletes competing in the world cup.

Meanwhile, head of the European Union (EU) election observing group has reported that IEC employees, security institutions, observers and the people of Afghanistan have all illustrated a strong will to hold a successful election.

“From what I have seen at these polling stations, I see very committed people who are determined to make this Election Day a success,” Thijs Berman, EU election observation mission chairman, said. "They are here and they are waiting patiently during the whole day and doing their work as observers or as civil observant of IEC would."

As polling comes to an end, people await the aftermath of the first presidential runoff in the history of the country.
