Kunduz provincial Electoral Complaints Commission (IEC) office head, Sebghatullah Wafaye, announced his resignation from his post on Sunday afternoon because of supposed interference by the central ECC office.

Wafaye said that the ECC employees sent confidential information to both the electoral commissions’ provincial offices and headquarters.

“The Chief of Secretariat of Kunduz’s provincial ECC would send classified and non-classified information to the IEC office in Kunduz and the IEC headquarters, which was supported by both electoral commissions’ headquarters,” he said. “My ineffectiveness to prevent the planned frauds from happening resulted in my decision to resign.”

Meanwhile, the officials of the IEC provincial office in Kunduz said their office has been closed after the employees of the commission received threats from a number of protestors who pitched a tent near the office.

“We do not have security guards to provide security for our office from the protestors who are outside of our office inside tents,” Amir Hamza, head of IEC provincial office in Kunduz, said.

Sayed Sarwar Hussaini, Kunduz police chief, assured the IEC officials that they will provide security for the office and the employees so that no one will face threats.

“We do not have any problem in providing security for the electoral office,” he said. “The electoral commission should go ahead and continue their work normally.”

On Friday, the head of Takhar province's ECC, Barna Salehi, announced his resignation from his post because of believed meddling by the government and the IEC in the election process.
