KABUL (Pajhwok): The Afghanistan Congress Party on Thursday asked the government to set dates for the long due parliamentary and district council elections without further delay.

Mohammad Aziz Asefi, the party’s leadership council head, told journalists here the government should announce dates for the elections to Wolesi Jirga and district councils since the ballots and a subsequent Loya Jirga were necessary for resolving of the current problems and legitimising the government.

He said the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) needed to become legitimised and it could get its legitimacy only through a Loya Jirga.

President Ashraf Ghani and CEO Abdullah Abdullah formed the unity government a year back, vowing to bring reforms to the electoral system and pave the ground for free and fair parliamentary elections.

They agreed on equal distribution of power between the two teams and pledged to end corruption and call a Loya Jirga into session to convert the presidential system to a parliamentary one. The Loya Jirga would convert the CEO post into the post of a prime minister.

Asefi said: “We support every move that is beneficial for the country’s stability. But there should be changes in the regime and specially in the leadership of security forces.”

He lauded performance of the security forces, saying without due change in their leadership, the gap between the masses and the government would further widen.

Hamida Wardak, a member of the party’s leadership council, said the government should adopt a clear stance against insurgents and terms like “brothers and enemies” should be clearly defined.

Hamida also stressed the need for changes in the leadership of the security forces. “Security organs have failed to identify the so-called ‘5th Pillar’ within the regime. They should unearth this.”
