The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Monday accused the Electoral Reform Commission (ERC) of overstepping its authority and trying to replace the election body’s members.

But the reform panel maintains all its efforts have been in line with the presidential decree.

Noor Mohammad Noor, the IEC spokesman, told journalists in Kabul instead of focusing on shortcomings in the previous elections, the reform panel had deviated from its way and could not provide tangible suggestions.

“The head and deputy head of the reform commission have overstepped their authorities specified in the presidential decree,” he remarked.

“We, members of the Independent Election Commission, ask the president not to allow the reforms panel to act outside its jurisdiction,” he continued.

Noor said the panel often acted in an executive way while the decree clearly stated they could only present plans, ideas and suggestions to the government.

“The election commission is of the opinion that some of the reform commission’s suggestions have positive aspects and we welcome it. But the issues that are beyond the presidential decree imposed by some individuals are not acceptable to us,” he noted.

He accused the electoral reform panel of focusing more on complaints and replacement of the election commission members istead of reforms.

Sediqullah Tawhidi, the reform panel’s deputy head, rejected the IEC’s claims, saying Noor was speaking on behalf of “individuals who were sacked for the sake of electoral reforms.”

“We only work in line with the president’s decree. We have done nothing illegal and won’t do so,” he said.
