KABUL (Pajhwok): Electoral Reform Commission (ERC) members on Monday said their evaluation study on changing electoral system, shrinking constituencies and defining role of the transparency committee has been somehow finalised.

At the end of August the Electoral Reforms Commission (ERC) following discussions with different segments of society submitted its set of 10 suggestions regarding electoral reforms to the government. The President approved seven of the suggestions and tasked the panel to find ways for implementation of the other three suggestions.

Dr. Bashir Faroq, ERC member, said the second set of suggestions for midterm reforms focused on internal procedures and capacities of the election commissions.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News: “At this stage that also contains long-term reforms we want preparations for next elections. Thus, a set of laws, procedures and bills have been suggested and work on them is ongoing.”

Faroq said in the first set of suggestions that included changing the electoral system, decreasing the size of electoral constituencies and role of transparency committee needed review and further study and the ERC had given them top priority.

He added their evaluation in this regard had been finalised and would be presented to the government soon.
