KABUL (Pajhwok): Some Mesharano Jirga members on Tuesday said the government was not willing to hold parliamentary and district council elections, stressing increased pressure on the regime to conduct the ballots.
Senator Gul Ahmad Azami said they had recently a meeting with the president, in which they found the government unwillingness to conduct the elections visible.
He said if more pressure was not exerted on the government, the elections to the lower house might not take place in next two years.
The lawmaker believed the delay in holding the election had resulted in widening the gap between the government and the masses and the situation added to the people’s mistrust over the government.
Azami said if dates for the elections were not determined, the president would inaugurate an unconstitutional house.
He demanded the president brief the house about the growing insecurity, the delay in conducting elections, and the delay in distribution of computerized identity cards.
His colleague Nader Baloch criticised government’s policies and termed them worse than the enemies of the country. He said the government did not have any preparedness to conduct the lower house elections.
Mohammad Asif Sediqui, the Senate’s second deputy chairman, also stressed the conduct of the Wolesi Jirga and district council elections.
He said the authorities should not cite insecurity as an excuse for the delay in holding the elections.
He said the parliamentary affairs minister had been told several times to arrange meeting of lawmakers with the president, but he took no step in this regard.
Article 83 of the constitution says: “Wolesi Jirga members are elected through direct, free and sector voting. The tenure of incumbent lower house ends on June 21, the fifth year after the declaration of election result and election for the new house shall take in one or two months before the end of the incumbent Wolesi Jirga tenure.”
