KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan’s Civil Society Coordination Centre (CSCC) said on Sunday rejected the nomination of three civil society representatives to the selection committee, a body tasked with recommending commissioners on the election commissions.
The selection committee should be comprised of three members from the civil society, one woman, one member of the Supreme Court High Council, one member from the Afghanistan Independent Human Right Commission (AIHRC) and one from the Independent Administrative Reform Commission (IARC).
After a long wait, the selection committee held its first meeting last Thursday and is set to formally launch its work of introducing nominees as members-designate of the two electoral bodies to the president after meeting the unity government leaders this week.
Din Mohammad Giran, Shariah Law faculty dean at Kabul University, is representing the Supreme Court High Council in the panel.
Mohammad Nadir Hotak, recruitment board head at IARC, represents IARC and Lotfur Rahman Saeed, a former member of the Independent Commission for Overseeing the Implementation of Constitution (ICOIC) has also been introduced to the selection committee as one of its members.
Fahim Dashti, Afghanistan Journalists National Union (AJNU) head, is representing the media. Naeem Ayoubzada, Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistan (FEFA) chief, is representing civil society organizations in the selection committee while Zarqa Yaftali, head of Women and Children Rights Investigative Organization (WCRIO), is representing legal organizations and Ahmad Zia Langar, a commissioner of AIHRC, is among other members of the body.
But CSCC chief Khan Zaman Amarkhel termed the appointment of civil society representatives to the committee as illegal, saying the three members had been introduced through an improper manner and were not acceptable to all civil society groups.
He told Pajhwok Afghan News: “We are going to knock at the door of parliament and ask lawmakers to prevent the process.”
He said the government should consult civil society before the selection committee launched its work.
Amerkhel demanded the introduction of deserving and qualified persons to the committee to represent the civil society.
