Crisis if parliamentary polls not held next year: Danish

KABUL (Pajhwok): The second vice-president on Thursday said the government was committed to holding parliamentary and district council elections next year based on reforms to be applied.

Sarwar Danish in a message to a gathering in Kabul said the country would face widespread problems if the elections were not held next year.

The gathering was arranged by the Afghan Civil Society Election Network (ACSEN) about electoral reforms.

Timor Hakimyar, a member of ACSEN’s leadership board, called electoral reforms as vital for transparent future elections.

He said all national and international organisations had agreed to reforms in the country’s electoral regime in order to prevent irregularities and problems.

Hakimyar said his network was asking civil society institutes, media outlets and political intellectuals to support reforms in the election system and play their role in strengthening democracy.

A message from Sarwar Danish was read out at the gathering. Danish in his message said the electoral reform would not only help avoid a repetition of 2014 election crisis, but would also strengthen the electoral bodies, democracy and restore people’s trust in the process.

The VP said the government was decisive in implementing the electoral reforms. He said the government had taken important steps towards implementing electoral reforms.

 In this regard, he cited the creation of the Electoral Reform Commission (ERC), the selection committee and the approval two legislative decrees.

He said the government was determined to hold elections to the Wolesi Jirga and district councils next solar year with implementation of reforms in the electoral system.

Danish warned the country would face serious problems and would lose past achievements if the election process failed.

A representative from Chief Executive Officer (CEO)  Habiba Surabi said that the election bodies had problems in 2014 election process, warranting electoral reforms.

Surabi said right suggestions provided by the ERC should be approved and that both the president and the CEO had agreed on reforms in the electoral system.
