Former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami is calling on Iranian voters to support the Rohani administration in the second round of parliamentary elections.

In a statement, Khatami highlights the sensitivity of the elections and urges even those who did not go to the polls in the first round to now vote in support of the moderate factions of the government.

The second round of elections will take place on Friday April 29 to determine the fate of 69 of the 290 seats in Parliament, which could have a pivotal effect on the makeup of the coming Parliament.

Campaigning begins in Iran's parliamentary run-off elections scheduled for April 29, seen as a test for the administration of President Hassan Rouhani and his critics.

The election campaigns began on Thursday and will end 24 hours before the start of the voting process, which is scheduled to be held on April 29 for the constituencies where candidates failed to obtain the required minimum 25 percent of votes cast.

As many as 136 individuals in 55 constituencies will compete to fill 68 remaining seats of the 290-seat Parliament (Majlis) in this round of the elections.

Iranian Parliament Approves Subsidy Cuts To 24 Million Iranians

The parliament in Tehran has approved a bill to cancel cash subsidies to 24 million Iranians, according to local reports.

Under the changes, the government will have to end monthly cash payments of around $12 a person for many civil servants, members of the armed forces, paramilitary volunteers, and others who already receive social welfare, according to the ISNA agency.

Analysts say the action by the conservative-dominated parliament on April 12 has angered President Hassan Rohani, who will have to figure out how to put the unpopular measure into effect.

Reformists give recommendations for second round of voting

Iran’s reformists report that they are endorsing 52 candidates in the second round of parliamentary elections next month.

Al Sufi, a spokesman for the group, told the Shargh daily on Wednesday April 6: “In some ridings we are not endorsing anyone; in others we are endorsing reformists or independent candidates, and in a very few cases, we are supporting the moderate conservative.”

He said only four moderate conservatives are being endorsed by the reformists in the second round.

Isfahan candidate disqualified despite voter support

Nasim Online reported on Tuesday March 22 that Minoo Khaleghi, a leading candidate in Isfahan, was disqualified by the Guardian Council. Her name had been on the list of candidates endorsed by reformists.

According to the report, the fifth representative from Isfahan will therefore be elected in a by-election.

Khaleghi, 31, is an environmental activist, has a master’s degree in communications law and is pursuing a PhD degree in general law.

According to the final results issued by the elections office, Khaleghi was in third place among the Isfahan candidates.

Iran’s Guardian Council validates results for Experts Assembly elections

Iran’s Guardian Council, which oversees elections and legislation, has validated the results for last month’s Assembly of Experts elections.

In a letter to the Interior Ministry on Thursday, Iran’s top supervisory and vetting body confirmed the results of the February Assembly of Experts elections for all constituencies across the country.

On February 26, Iranians went to the polls in twin elections to choose members of the Majlis (Parliament) and Assembly of Experts.

Iran’s Guardian Council, which oversees elections and legislation, has reportedly addressed electoral complaints weeks after the country’s double elections, confirming a healthy voting process at dozens of the constituencies in question.

Siyamak Rahpeyk, the spokesman for Iran’s Central Elections Supervising Committee, said Monday that “so far [the results of] more that 100 constituencies have been reviewed by the Guardian Council and the election process [there] has been validated.”

Tehran, Feb 9, IRNA – Minister of Intelligence Mahmoud Alavi here on Tuesday called for massive turnout in the upcoming parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections on February 26, 2016.

Speaking in a gathering attended by university chancellors and professors, Alavi said Iranian people would speak to people across the globe while casting their ballots in the elections.

A senior Iranian lawmaker slams a request by three US lawmakers for visas to Iran to monitor the upcoming elections, saying polls in the Islamic Republic need no international monitoring.

“Elections in the Islamic Republic of Iran need no international oversight and in case of any need (to monitoring) , that (monitor) will definitely not be the United States,” Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Alaeddin Boroujerdi told IRIB news on Saturday.

Tehran, Feb 7, IRNA – President Hassan Rouhani urged the nation to take part in the upcoming elections in Iran under any circumstances.

Addressing a gathering on women, development and moderation here Sunday, the President regretted that the country was presently suffering from extremism from both ends.

He said extremism takes its roots not from violence but from minds.

Iran body reverses ban on 1500 election candidates

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran’s constitutional watchdog, the Guardian Council, has reversed a ban on 1,500 candidates who had registered to run in Feb. 26 parliamentary elections.

 

State TV on Saturday said that says a list of approved candidates has been conveyed to Iran’s Interior Ministry.

The council, which is responsible for vetting candidates, had disqualified a large number of moderates, but it’s not clear how many of the approved candidates are considered to be reformists.

Rafsanjani’s controversial remarks on Iran’s elections cause a stir

On February 1, the former Iranian president Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani directed harsh criticism at the country’s Guardian Council.
