EU, U.S. urge Bosnia to pass reforms critical for EU bid, IMF funds

European Union and U.S. envoys warned Bosnia's leaders on Wednesday that the country risked missing out on closer ties with the EU in the near term and losing 2 billion euros in support due to an impasse over reforms.

Bosnia hoped Brussels would consider its EU membership bid at its next ministerial council in mid-July, but without the reforms this may not happen.

Updated structure of the government has new ministers

 Today the Parliament approved the candidacies of five government members, two of whom head the new government structures. Already acting ministers, whose departments were renamed, have been also reappointed. 

A new position was added to the Cabinet - Vice Prime Minister for Border Affairs - it is former authorized representative of the Government in Batken region Zhenish Razakov.

Higher Education Minister, Sumayia Abu Kosha Tuesday proposed to ban armed political activities in the Sudanese universities .

In last April and May, several universities witnessed protests and clashes between students supporting armed groups in Darfur and the Tow Areas and those who are backing the ruling National Congress Party (NCP).

May government officials accused the armed groups of trying to export violence to the Sudanese universities through their sympathisers.

The European Union on Monday has welcomed the unilateral cessation of hostilities by the Sudanese government and called on the warring parties to move forward for peace in Sudan.

The spokeswoman for the EU’s foreign service, Catherine Ray, said the four-month unilateral truce announced earlier this month comes after a similar gesture by the alliance of rebel groups Sudan Revolutionary Front (SAF)in April 2016.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir on Tuesday blamed Hizbullah and Iran for the protracting political vacuum in Lebanon, a day after the party accused Riyadh of blocking political solutions in the country.

“Hizbullah, with Iranian support, is to blame for the political vacuum in Lebanon seeing as it is obstructing any effort aimed at resolving the presidential void crisis,” said Jubeir at a joint press conference he held with his French counterpart Jean-Marc Ayrault.

IMF warns Albania against government payment arrears

The International Monetary Fund said on Tuesday Albania's economic recovery should strengthen this year but warned it not to let government payment arrears grow and risk a repeat of the heavy borrowing when it came to power three years ago.

Reviewing Albania's 330 million euro ($365 million) 36-month programme signed in February 2014, an IMF team said they had reached a staff-level agreement with Albania after finding their economic programme was "broadly on track".

Constitutional Court calls on Jokowi to OK regional elections bill

The Constitutional Court has called on President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to immediately sign the bill on a revision to the 2015 Regional Elections Law that was approved by the House of Representative earlier this month.

The signing of bill by the President is necessary so that the court can proceed with a judicial review submitted by groups of residents, said Constitutional Court chairman Arief Hidayat in Jakarta on Monday.

The Palestinian Central Elections Commission (CEC) has started preparing for local council elections in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip to be held on Oct. 8, CEC Chairman Hanna Nasser said on Monday. 

Speaking at a news conference at the CEC offices in the West Bank city of al-Bireh, Nasser said that the commission would do everything necessary to “guarantee freedom of elections,” including the freedom to run as a candidate and to run a campaign.

A leading member in the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) Nafie Ali Nafie has resumed verbal attacks on the opposition groups, saying all their attempts to lead a popular uprising “intifada” have failed.

Nafie resigned from his post as presidential assistant and NCP deputy chairman in December 2013 after wide changes in the government.
