MAKKAH — The registration of voters for the third municipal elections will begin in Makkah on Sunday, according to Mayor Osama Albar, who is the chairman of the province's local committee for elections.

He said the registration of candidates who will contest the elections will begin on Aug. 30.

Albar said the General Committee for the Elections has agreed to advance the registration of voters in Makkah due to the holy city's special circumstances stemming from the large number of people coming for the annual Haj.

Dr Anwar Mohammad Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Federal National Council Affairs and head of the National Election Committee (NEC) has called for broad and active participation in the Federal National Council (FNC) elections scheduled to be held on October 3.

“Broad and effective participation in the FNC elections will open new horizons for the parliamentary life in the UAE and render successful the political empowerment of citizens,” Dr Gargash said.

Municipal poll chief asks candidates to follow code of conduct

JEDDAH: Candidates contesting the municipal elections have been asked to strictly abide by the code of conduct for organizing poll campaigns.
The move comes from Municipal and Rural Affairs Minister Abdul Lateef Al-Asheikh, who also heads the General Committee for the Municipal Elections.
In a circular, he stressed the importance of following the rules and regulations, from the time they submit an application for seeking a license to organize campaigns.
The campaigns can be launched within 15 days of the date of announcement of the list of candidates.

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli announced that almost 4,000 people are likely to declare candidacy for the upcoming parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections early 2016.

"There are signs and indications that some 4,000 people plan to declare their candicacy in the elections," Rahmani Fazli told reporters in Tehran on Monday.

He predicted that the upcoming parliamentary and Experts Assembly elections would be a scene of hot rivalries.

Ministry suspends Baladi Initiative, sparks debate

JEDDAH: The Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs has suspended the Baladi Initiative, triggering a debate as some commercial establishments have already started training workshops and seminars for females in view of the forthcoming civic polls and many are about to launch the same.
A local publication on Saturday said, quoting sources, that the ministry may be planning to organize these courses itself to ensure that they are not used for commercial purposes.

Drop in female Shura aspirants cause for concern in Oman

MUSCAT: Only 21 out of the 674 candidates for October’s Majlis Al Shura elections are women, a number that is raising concerns about the lack of female representation in Oman’s political system.

In the 2011 elections 77 out of the 1,133 candidates were women, a total of 6.7 per cent. This year women represent just 3.1 per cent. In the current Majlis Al Shura, the lone woman, Naama Jamil Al Busaidi, makes up 1.2 per cent of the 84-member chamber.

HAIL: The local election committee in Hail has revealed that voter registration is a pre-condition to cast the ballot, while emphasizing on enrolling themselves in the voter registry, which begins on Aug. 22 and continues for 21 days. 
Saad Al-Thuweini of the media directorate in Hail municipality said that a voting register will be allocated to both men and women in election centers, saying that every citizen is eligible to vote if he or she aged above 18 years. 

One-year jail, SR50,000 fine for buying votes

JEDDAH: In its bid to make the polls fair and transparent, the executive committee for elections of municipal councils has announced that anyone found buying votes will have to serve one year in prison or pay a SR50,000 fine or both, according to a report in the local media.
Jadee bin Nahar Al-Qahtani, president of the executive committee, said elaborate arrangements have been made to ensure a fair and smooth election process.

ABU DHABI // The Federal National Council elections will be a politically empowering, unifying process for the whole country, says the chairman of the organising body.

“Any development that a country goes through needs to be a complete one and the political process is one of those essential components,” said Dr Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for FNC Affairs and chairman of the National Election Commission.

Dr Gargash addressed a group of military officers and policemen on the October 3 elections, at the Armed Forces Officers Club on Wednesday.
