Interior ministry says new reformist party needs permit for political activity

Iran’s Ministry of Interior announced on Monday August 31 that the Union of Islamic Nation of Iran does not have the necessary permit to begin political activities.

Mehr News Agency reported on Monday that Hossein Ali Amiri, a spokesman for the interior ministry said: “The procedure is such that the Article 10 Commission issues a permit to establish the party. However this permit is only sufficient to form the party. The permit to begin political activities has to be then issued by the ministry of interior.”

Candidates wishing to stand in Egypt's parliamentary ‎polls will be able to begin registering on Tuesday after passing medical tests that will cost them EGP 2850 ($365) each.

In a press conference on Sunday, Ayman Abbas, head of the ‎Higher Elections Committee (HEC) in charge of ‎supervising the polls, announced that candidates ‎seeking to stand in the coming parliamentary elections ‎can register between 1 and 12 September.‎

‎"Registration will begin at 9am and end at 5pm, except ‎on 12 September, when the window to register will close ‎at 2pm," said Abbas. ‎

Twenty women among 596 candidates remaining in the fray for 85 seats.

Seventy-eight candidates vying for seats in Oman’s Shura council have withdrawn from the elections slated for October citing personal reasons, according to the Ministry of Interior.

The number of candidates still in the race stands at 596, including 20 women.

Dhofar is the governorate with the highest number of candidates at 126, followed by Dhakliyah with 77, Muscat with 70, South Batinah with 61 and North Batinah with 60.

La Comisión Electoral de Egipto ha informado este domingo de que las elecciones legislativas egipcias se celebrarán los días 18 y 19 de octubre, después de tres años sin Parlamento, con lo que se cerrará la transición tras el golpe de Estado de julio de 2013 contra el presidente islamista Mohamed Morsi.

Estos dos días se celebrará la primera fase de las elecciones, mientras que la segunda será los días 22 y 23 de noviembre, ha informado la Comisión Electoral en rueda de prensa. Los egipcios residentes en el extranjero podrán votar los días 17 y 18 de octubre.

The first phase of Egypt’s parliamentary elections will start on 17-18 October for Egyptians abroad and 18-19 October for voters inside Egypt, the Higher Electoral Commission (HEC) announced in a press conference late Sunday.   

 

Judge Ayman Abbas, head of HEC, added that the second phase of the elections would start on 21-22 November for Egyptians abroad and 22-23 November for Egyptians in Egypt.

ERC releases Afghan electoral reform proposal

Afghan Electoral Reform Commission on Sunday presented its reform proposal to government.

The package included 11 major recommendations including invalidation of existing voter cards, launch of e-ID cards and ‘parallel’ system of voting where one-third of parliamentary seats shall be allotted to political parties.

Shah Sultan Akifi, ERC’s chief, also said that the package included recommendations over appointments in the Independent Election Commission and Electoral Complaints Commission.

JEDDAH — The registration of candidates for the third municipal council elections scheduled for Dec. 12 started all over the Kingdom on Sunday and will continue for 17 days.

The registration had started in Makkah and Madinah a week earlier. For the first time in Saudi history, women were allowed to participate in the elections as voters and candidates in a move described by observers as an advanced step aimed at empowering Saudi women and involving them in the process of decision making.

Two members of the Afghan Electoral Reform Commission on Saturday boycotted the body claiming it was working more for the interests of political parties.

The protesters argued that a plan outside national interest was already imposed on the 12-member commission.

“It should have been a national commission but unfortunately it has been turned out as a multi-party agenda,” said Kawwon Kakar, one of the protesting members. “The parties with their representatives in the commission tried to impose their plan there.”

La Asociación Marroquí de Derechos Humanos (AMDH) denunció hoy los excesos en la actual campaña de elecciones municipales y regionales así como la "represión" ejercida contra aquellos que llamaron a boicotearlas. 

La AMDH, la mayor ONG del país, lamentó la detención durante varias horas de militantes del partido Vía Democrática (marxista-leninista) en varias ciudades de Marruecos cuando distribuían panfletos llamando a boicotear estas elecciones, previstas para el próximo 4 de septiembre.

Le mouvement du 20 février prévoit de manifester le mercredi 2 septembre prochain à 18 heures à la place Bab El Had à Rabat. « Nous avons décidé de protester contre la corruption et le manque de liberté d’expression pendant les élections », explique à Telquel.ma Samad Iach, activiste au sein du mouvement du 20 Février. Il fait notamment référence à  l’arrestation de plusieurs militants d’Annahj Addimocrati appelant au boycott des prochaines échéances électorales, le 23 août à Casablanca et Sefrou, et d’autres militants le 25 août dernier.

Lors d’une conférence tenue le 26 août à l’Institut supérieur de la magistrature, le ministre de la Justice Mustapha Ramid, a rappelé encore une fois aux juges leur devoir de neutralité. « Ce qui me préoccupe actuellement, n’est pas tant la question de l’indépendance de la justice du pouvoir exécutif, mais plutôt l’indépendance des magistrats des partis politiques ». Et d’ajouter qu’il existe « des personnes dans des partis politiques souhaitant mettre des juges dans leur poche. Or ces derniers doivent rester indépendants et garder leur neutralité », déclare-t-il.

ABU DHABI // The National Election Commission has been overwhelmed by applications – most of them from women – to volunteer for the FNC elections.

It is now training 1,400 volunteers from the 2,549 who applied after the offers were reviewed by a committee.

“It is great to see so many women taking part in the coming elections and having so many women volunteer in the organisation of the elections, especially as we embark on the first UAE Women’s Day,” said Ahlam Al Lamki, a director at the General Women’s Union.

JEDDAH: The Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs has admitted that voter registration is still slow but clarified that this has nothing to do with the start of the new academic year.

ABU DHABI // Candidates for the Federal National Council have told of their reasons for stepping forward, as the objection process for the elections began on Monday.

Sheikh Musallam Salem bin Ham Al Ameri said the people of his emirate had asked him to nominate himself. “The idea was crossing my mind, but when the people asked me to run I was happy to,” said Sheikh Al Ameri, 37, chief executive of Kolluna Al Emarat.

The society promotes Emirati identity and trains nationals to deal with emergencies.
